A 640 no dash generally brings $100 over a similar 642. I would say a very nice one will bring 500-550 today. LNIB with wood grips may go to $600.

I would think a clean example with the box would be $550-$600 in a normal market. Given the current insanity you could possibly get $650-$700, especially if you throw in a box of .38 ammo. Seems like a everything is bringing a $100 mark up these days, and people are paying it.

Your 640 in .38 is a VERY desirable EDC firearm. There are 2 forum members who have indicated their interest in buying mine. With the current unstable situation, I am not looking to sell my 640. Should you decide to move yours to buy a .22, I hope you have another firearm that could fill in as an EDC. The previous members are spot on re pricing.

Well I already use my old 640 as my EDC... My niece wants my 642 for jogging and I'm giving it to her. So I broke out my FIRST CCW GUN I used back in 96!!
I was paranoid about being spotted so I bought a new 640, had red insert front sight added, and Eagle Secret Service stocks. Yes still have that sucker (and I'll show you!) But I also have another 640 sleeping in the safe.
Now the picture. My 640 is in it. Also my 64 (my SECOND CCW gun I carried when I wore a behind the hip holster.) And yep, I still have that gun to!

looks like GB completed auctions lists the sold prices in the ranges already mentioned. One exception is this nice example that sold for $350.
Smith & Wesson Model 640 (no dash) .38 Special Penny Start/NR - Revolvers at GunBroker.com : 878575700
Damn, wish I had seen that up for auction. But i wasn't looking for one because I have one that I don't carry any more...the 642-1 has taken over.

I paid $500 total (shipping and transfer fees) for a very nice one with factory cardboard box on GB a couple months ago.

Here is something to consider on why the 640 no dash appears to be worth little compared to other no lock guns. They still make a 640-1 without a lock but chambered in 357. Where many classics bring a premium, the 640 no dash may be worth less than a new 640-1 since there isn’t a lock and it’s chambered in 357mag.

With a 640ND being my grail gun, there have been a few times when I chased them on gun auctions. It's been a few years since I've been able to do so, but each time I had to bow out when the bidding went above $600, the limit of my budget. I think one went above $700, but I can't remember what the others ultimately sold for.
I've never seen one in a LGS.
In addition to auctions, you could do a search of the Classifieds subforum here as I know there've been some 640NDs sold there.
FWIW, I would consider a price in the $500-600 range for a 640ND in good condition to be a fair price.
Someday, I hope to have both the money and the opportunity to get a 640ND. Unfortunately, that day is not today.

One more thing... $30 shipping and whatever your FFL holder charges. So even if it's $365 bucks you add shipping and FFL fees. Also add 3% credit card fee. $10.95. Could make that gun an easy $450 gun.
12 bids so far. I wonder if it really is $365.
3 days left on the bidding.

I would not be selling a nice S&W revolver. I would accumulate nice S&W revolvers. I regret almost every gun trade or sale that I have made.
Furthermore, a good .38 J frame is something you can always have with you.

I did not realize that the 640 ND was all that special. I bought mine quite a while ago, and I consider the double action trigger pull to be the best of any of the J-frames I own.
This one has Herrett's "Shooting Star" stocks made many years ago to fit my hand perfectly - originally on a Model 60.
And no, I can't be talked into parting with this stout, reliable and slick little gun!

I like my Model 640 a lot and the fact that it doesn't take .357 loads bothers me not one bit. Loaded with the old Nyclad +P FBI loads I don't feel undergunned and it is still fairly controllable. Mine is like Paladin's regarding the trigger, it is surprisingly smooth and measures a little over 9 lbs on my Lyman digital trigger gauge.

I’d gladly pay $600 for a prissy 640 with box and original stocks (BTW, they came two ways - rubber and wood) if I didn’t have one. If I had one and liked it at all, I’d probably not sell it to buy another gun.

I would prefer the .357 version of the 640 for versatility. Sweet little guns. The first couple posts with prices listed seem like a perfect range.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but the 640ND checks a lot of points for a carry snub. Compact, like all 1-7/8" J-frames. All steel, so more durable than the lightweights with less felt recoil, but still light and compact enough to be easily carried, especially on the belt. Enclosed hammer so less opportunity for crud to get into the action. A little lighter and slightly more compact than the J-magnum-framed 640-1, thus a little more size-efficient for someone who only intends to use .38 Special ammo. No lock. While I don't hate on MIM parts like some purists do, I do like that it's a non-MIM gun.
And, for a less rational reason, Ed Lovette, a former CIA paramilitary operations officer who wrote the classic book, The Snubby Revolver, which I'm a big fan of, has said that the 640ND was one of the sidearm options for those CIA operatives authorized to be armed. To me, it adds appeal in addition to all the practical reasons for wanting a 640ND.
Though I will add, a DAO 649 in .38 Special would be a close 2nd.

Well I actually do have the 649 and 649-1 as well as the 640-1.
But I still gravitate to the original 640! Notice this 640 is NOT my old CCW gun. No red insert front sight.
