Default Mod 64-4 2" Square Butt - +P???

I bought a 64-4, two inch from LGS about 10 years ago. No special markings. I really don't know dates on the dash models so I might even be in the wrong forum.

I'm wondering if this model can shoot +P ammo. I have some +P but no standard .38s. And these days I can't find any ammo in Kansas City or on line.

The current S&W web site says the model 64 is +P rated. Can anyone comment on the 64-4 era models?

Thanks for your help!

Shoot all the +P's you want (assuming the gun is in good mechanical order). It can handle it.

We were issued the Model 64, both snub and four inch, and our duty round was the 158 grain +P HP, which we shot in annual qualification for a few years when we were issued new duty ammo. The guns held up fine.

First as said shoot all the +P you want. Question for you though. 2” Square butt?? Was this a re-barrel? I don’t think S&W ever made a factory 2” square butt 64.

Smith and Wesson has advised for years that revolvers marked with model numbers are safe to use +P ammo.

Thanks for all the info. I shot it this morning along with my new 5” 686 Deluxe. Nice big flame/flash from 2”.....nothing from 5”. No problems except snappy recoil on shorty.

I don’t know if it’s been rebarrelled. If they did, it’s an excellent job. No tool marks at all.

Years ago, gunsmith Andy Cannon did magnificent work on Smith revolvers, including "street" guns. Fell in love with a photo of a 2" Model 65 conversion he had done. Andy passed away in 2005, another member informed me. Perhaps this 64 is one of his conversions?
