I picked up a unused, mismatched set of Herret’s grips for a J frame revolver a few years back for $10 in a bargain bin. These are my favorite grips for the J frame especially the standard checkering. The fancy checkering was very sharp but wore down nicely after a couple years of use. I wish these were still being made. The grip profile makes the gun handle more like a Colt but is quite comfortable even shooting rip-snorter .357 Magnum 158gr. JSP loads in a S&W 640. Here they are on a current model 63-5.

I've always liked the Herrretts too. I've used the S&W N, K/L, J-frame and Colt I-frame versions.

those are Herrett Shooting ace grips.
i just sold 4 sets on ebay over the last couple of months .
call herrett grips to see if they are still making them.

That is a nice quartet of grips there. What model grip is that? Is the backstrap exposed on that model of grip? The backstrap is covered on the Shooting Ace grips pushing your hand back 1/4” further from the trigger. For my hand size it really makes the J frames more comfortable to shoot but not so good for pocket carry. But for pancake holster carry they are great which is why they now reside on my model 63 kit gun.

Back in the 1970s my favorite stocks for my Model 36 were the Herrett's model the original post is about. I've since learned that I shoot J frames better with stocks that cover the back strap extending their trigger reach to about that of a K frame.

Rock185's "nice quartet of grips" are Shooting Stars. They are my favorite Herrett stock for K and larger frames with loads that do not have heavy recoil. In addition to not covering the back strap they are slimmer than most stocks at the top. That's not the best for heavy recoil but compared to 1980s S&W Target Stocks it shortens trigger reach. The Shooting Stars' shorter trigger reach helps me with N frames.

After hearing all the love for Herrett's grips I went looking for a set for a j frame.
Every nice set I found was well over $100.
I decided to go with new Altamont grips for well under $100.
Maybe they are not as nice, but I will survive.

Ah, good to know. I actually don’t care for the 1980’s S&W target stocks as they are so huge at the bottom of the grip where my pinky finger resides and makes it stick out at a weird angle. Thanks for the info.

Yes, this pretty steep. The shop that I got mine had both sets for about $70 and that was 10 years ago. And I survived without them for a while. Then somehow the halves disappeared over time and that same shop had the combined set for $10 so that was a lucky find for me.

$100 is just nuts! I had many pairs of the Shoiting Ace that were never used and still in the box. I sold them on this forum for between $30-$40 a piece. I still have some Shooting Star grips for Colt Mk III and SAA that I've posted here a few times for sale, but there doesn't seem to be much interest in them. Makes sense since this is a S&W forum!

Those herrett shooting aces are the best I have them on a 36 3 inch and an old colt cobra.I dont think they are made anymore but they seem to come up on e bay and in this forums for sale section quite a bit.
