Ah, at last, a homeless Model 60-4
I've been searching for one of these little dickens for a l-o-n-g time!
I don't feel bad about tonight's hammer price of $705, just the revolver. I know many of you have done much better. These things don't exist in central Wyoming, and the other ones I've seen at auction have gone far higher.
I have ten other 3" Chiefs, including two Baby Chiefs. This one seemed harder for me to finally nail down than many of the others, although I'll admit the 36-8 posed a challenge.
Anyway, I can't wait to get it in hand (seller's photo).

I adopted one about a year ago. Good work! I know from experience how hard to find they can be one you decide you "need" one.

I sure do enjoy your photos, Bill. Your turquoise is always stunning, and your subtle backdrops are most appealing.
The 'Force thought I loved the desert southwest, and I did -- a total of 16 years in Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. But after my 28 years Wyoming's wind called me back home. I've not dismissed the possibility of following many of my snowbird friends back down there at some point in my future.

I totally agree about different grips. One of the first things I did to my wife's was replace them with grips that had more "meat". I really don't understand why Smith uses the stock ones they do. To me, they don't do much as far as recoil is concerned. Load it with 357's and you'll really find out how "effective" they aren't...

M-60-4 is an exceedingly accurate small .38. Mine loves both 125 grain and 135 grain (Short Barrel)Speer ammo as a business load.
It wears Pachmayrs, I think the basic Compac model.
But larger grips aren't a good idea in a concealment gun. I tried smooth rosewood Magnas and a Tyler adaptor on another and that fit my hand very well and was pretty secure in my grasp in a struggle. The rubber grips also help with retention.
Apart from defense, the M-60-4 is a fine snake and trail gun if you don't need more.

You will love it, a near perfect little packing gun. I carried mine a lot until we started having hogs on our place. I found a 60-10 (I think) 5" .357 that is now my kicking around / tractor gun. Congratulations on the find.

A very accurate little revolver. One of the best J-frames ever made, IMO.

At least a decade ago I was exposed to the Model 60-4 in the possession of a friend. As I’ve said before he finally had to find one for me to buy so he wouldn’t have to hide his every time I came to visit! 
If I could own only one 38 Spl, it would be a close tossup between the 60-4 and my 1948 vintage K38. It would be a tough choice for me.

A 60-4 has been on my want list for a while. For the mean time I’m making up for it by having two 60-10s.

each reply, but I really got a big charge out of many of your
comments.
For 1911-10MM & Dieseltech56: I already have a 60-10. That
seemed easy; this one was tough!
For Texas Star & Green Frog: before I posted my thread last
night I read all the 2019 threads about the 60-4 so I knew both
of your opinions about this model. Thanks for chiming in, here.
Bill in Texas: Ah, thanks for your note. I guess I should have
taken a photo at the Lander Gun Show last weekend. The gang
was there on its own table, atop a bright red table cloth.
Several folks told me they'd never seen that many Chiefs in one
place. (There really aren't that many, but they span
March 1951 through February 1998.)
It's just fun, and I love talking Chiefs history with folks. One chap
I met is an SWCA member from Alabama. Boyd was visiting his
son, who lives in Lander, now. Gentlemen, both!

Two bit, congratulations to you for the grab.
I have been wanting one of those to go with my 60-10.
I have passed on a couple that I now wished I would have paid the “ridiculous” asking price for. They seem very reasonable now.
The reason I want the -4 is the hammer mounted firing pin and forged parts.
NExt one that comes my way will be grabbed unless the price is stupid high. I can deal with ignorantly high.
Last couple 60-10’s I saw sell on that auction site went for mid $800’s to mid 900’s. Two of them had no box and one did. The one that did was in the mid $900’s.
Glad I grabbed mine when I did.

Bought my first one in '91 or '92 when they first came out. I picked up a spare two years ago, just in case I find a need for another. The shame is that the second one is in alot nicer shape than my original, but no box. Im not sure it has ever been shot.
For grips I run a pair of J frame targets. For carry, I like the factory Uncle Mikes. I've never actually carried it "concealed "arround town, but the old one probably has 1000 river miles of canoeing on my belt.

River-miles, eh? That’s a great term! Rivers are funny things. Some of them can course a lot of miles compared to the actual Point A-Point B distance.
The 60-4 is one of those revolvers that comes along every now and then that cries out to one’s conscience to have “a spare.”  I have two, but one has been used as a testbed and converted to a different caliber. It could always be “converted back,” I guess. The current revolver serving the spare function is a 60-10, which I’ve never fired. (Hope it works!  ) I’ll be hanging on to these fellows until I can’t walk much anymore. The 60-10 is a bit of an ugly duckling (owing to the perverted hammer and frame contours) but I guess such is the price of “progress.”
Congrats to the OP on finding his 60-4. (One of the best J-frames they’ve ever made, IMO.)

I bought this one three or four years ago. I paid $750 for it, which may have been a bit too early. It was, at that time, only the second one I had ever seen and the first had serious issues and the seller wanted $400 for it.
I paid $750 for the Model 36-6 earlier that year, so I did not hesitate to pay that.
Last year I found another one at the Raleigh gun show. It was listed at $495 and I bought it quickly for $500 OTD. I took it to a friend who had a table and he quickly sold it for $800, so I made up for potentially overpaying for mine.

I bought two S&W revolvers brand new. The first was a 60-4 and the last was a 696.
The 60-4 looks like the 696 that got shrunk in a too hot sonic tank. The Uncle Mike's grips work great for me, maybe it's the name?

Well, it arrived, but it took quite a trip to get here (see attached pdf).
This is the finest S&W I've ever owned. The fit and finish are
exquisite. I know, now, what all the fuss is about. Well worth the wait.

Two-bit Cowboy, the only long time of travel was Portland to Denver, and that was mostly uphill. The poor old mules got tired I guess!

My question would be, "Why'd it go to Portland in the first place"?
But your theory is sound. Took less than a day to get from Denver to Portland and three days to get back. Mules probably had to stop at MulePacker's over in Utah for a bite and a rest.

Over 10 years ago I owned one for about 10 minutes.
Then the thiven woman in my life "adopted "it , never to return.
For a while it wore Herrett's . But that kind of made it look like and feel like a Colt.
Then it got some combats.
Funny thing is She still kind of prefers the rubber it was born with.
O Yeah ,,,, It's not "my gun",,,,,, but I still get to clean it.

Ah, the ole wife pulling rank trick. Hate it when that happens.
So Bob, I have to weigh in here and say that my 3" 60-15 is absolutely, hands down my favorite shooter. Yes, it has the dreaded ILS but it doesn't bother me much. It's able to fire magnum rounds so I guess that's a decent trade-off.
It came to my humble home with Altamont grips but I quickly called S&W and got my hands on the original rubber ones. Just don't like my pinky floating around in the breeze. I'll attach before and after photos for everyone's viewing pleasure. Make sure you give that Model 60-4 a big hug for me when it comes in. And I hope it shoots as true as mine does!

I found my 60-4 a few days before finding my 66-3 2.5", both at my favorite LGS. I shot the 66-3 and it's never going to be sold, not while I'm still upright that is.
I planned on shooting the 60-4 but I showed it to my mechanic friend who uncharacteristically said that he'd like to buy it when I got tired of it (he almost never asks favors of me, yet he's bailed me out on my car problems for all the time I've known him). I called him the next day and sold it to him for what I paid. He's happy and I'm on the hunt for another one--for me, the hunt comes first, shooting second and owning is third.

I've told this story several times before. Poor Dale53 made the mistake of showing me his Model 60-4 then had to hide it every time I went to visit. His solution? He found one for me to buy so I'd leave his alone. What a guy!
