586 No Dash
Just picked up a 586 No Dash from my LGS.
I date it around Oct. 1983
The funny thing is the serial number has 1980 as the number, the same year they started the Model 586.
If I am reading the letters correctly ADE

Ok oysterer, you lost me on that.
I know of the numbering system AD In the year of (our) Lord
But not for S&W serial numbers.

Oyster, my amateur use of SCSW 4th Edition page 491 concurs with triple alpha serial ADE in 1983, but more knowledgeable folks may come along.

Good luck guys, short of someone from S&W, I don't think there's anyone who can fully decipher those Triple Alpha serial numbers!

Hi gang,
Just bought a 586-4 with a CAA68xx serial number.
Would about 1993 be a good guess as to when she was born?
I truly appreciate any help y'all.

I have two 686 4in No-Dashers, both from early 1986 with the alpha prefix of "AUExxxx". Bought the first one NEW in August 1986, with the birthday number of May 22, 1986 on the box.
FWIW, the best I can tell (owning the 3rd Ed. RE'd above), 585 & 686 production numbers appear to approximate each other according to the calendar year. Mostly this is a convoluted mess, and the only way to substantiate dates is by members sharing serial numbers MATCHED with box & paperwork (including LGS receipts, etc.).
FWIW, got all of the goodies on my 1st 686 (Aug.1986), but NOT on the second...lacking all the box numbers, paperwork, etc... Unfortunately attention to detail is an absolute must here...

According to my database, it is more likely your gun shipped the first part of 1984, probably January. FWIW, the Distinguished Combat Magnum, 586 & 686, first made it's appearance in mid 1981, Jun - Aug time frame. The 581's & 681's came just a few months later.

I just got a 586 serial number starts AAA. Called S&W and he told me that’s an early 1981 gun. It has the “M” stamped on it below the S/N so it’s been in for warranty.
