New S&W Quality Report
Started shooting 22lr to save my center fire ammo stash. Got tired of cleaning my M17. So I bought a new 617 4". Fit of frame, yoke, cylinder and side plate excellent. Finish excellent and consistent among barrel, cylinder and frame. Barrel straight. Cylinder Gap .004. DA Trigger pull firm, but smooth. Accurate at 25 yards. No issues with 300 rounds of 100 each of the cheapest Federal, Remington and Winchester. Sorry, no problems to report.

Agreed. Good Job by S&W. I appreciate the older S&W revolvers and don't discount that some people have had problems with new ones. But, just as with the 617, I have never had any issues with my other new or very recent production used S&W revolvers. Unfortunately, but understandably the problems get more attention.

To save money on ammo I've been thinking about getting a 617 but I also like the new 3" 63s with the Hi-Viz front sight. Can anyone speak to advantages/disadvantages of one vs the other?

Lack of availability of the one you want is the only disadvantage I can think of.

Congrats! The 4" M617 i have is accurate and trouble free. Friday was the first time I've shot my 22s in quite some time. Took my old 6" K22 (pre model no) out for a spin Friday. Forgot how much fun they are. Some times I just get sidetracked for months at a time.
These threads aren't much fun without pictures:

As my 617 currently sits at smith for issues with light strikes haha. A minor inconvenience, but I hope it comes back full ready to go. Glad yours went off without a hitch.

Apologies to SLCDW for stealing the thread. Intended use is simply improving my accuracy by getting to the range as often as possible. I'm going through 100 to 200 rounds a week and the cost of ammo, even 9mm, is just getting to be too much. 22 LR at five or six cents a round seems to be a good solution so I'm thinking a J-Frame 63 would shoot very similar to my Model 60. My 60 even has a Hi-Vis front sight like the new 63s. Would shooting a Model 63 translate well to my Model 60?

Hi-Viz front sights look fragile to me.

On a 22? Hell no. I have them on my shield that sees a couple hundred rounds a week sometimes and no shifting or damage whatsoever. And that gun is holstered/unholstered all the time. On a reciprocating moving slide no less.

My experience with S & W has not been so good as of late.
I have a .380 Bodyguard that has started having light primer strikes. The one I had before it had the same problem.
I also bought a new stainless S & W .22 revolver a year ago that I shipped back to the mother ship for the second time last week over barrel alignment and lead-spitting issues.
Frankly, I’ve had better luck with Taurus revolvers over the last few years. I hate to admit that because I have been a Smith and Wesson guy for over 40 years.

The main issue with Hi-Viz sights is contact with solvents will make them cloud up. But replacement pipes are very inexpensive. I love them.
