Default Help needed for a S&W Newbie

Bought a 686 6 inch, did not shoot straight, was dropped by previous owner on the rear sights, and could not adjust any further. Ordered new rear sight assy, does not fit. The sight extension running forward is wider and shorter, also the fixing screw is larger.

686 does not mean 686 I guess.

I cannot post Pics here for some reason, but it is a Model 686-3 with Serial Number BHV8734.

Can someone help me with finding out what I need to order to replace the rear adjustable sight set. Can send pics by email if needed.

THANKS

Barrel length matters and if the the front of the sight is square or rounded. Later models are rounded.

Welcome to the Forum. Too bad you are having difficulties with the rear sight.

Where did you order the sight? It looks like rear sights are almost a universal fit for S&W revolvers.

I think you need a certain number of posts before you can insert pictures.

Hi,

Ordered the sight set though Egun vendor here in Germany. He was also under the impression that a 6inch 686 is a 6 inch 686....

I do not know what a 686-3 is and I cannot find a definitive ship date via serial number. We do not have a lot of local S&W talent in southern Germany or I would just bring it into a shop.

Default Sights

Guten Morgan mein Herr
Which of the two types of sights do you have? The one on the left is an earlier gun. The one on the right should be a 686-4 gun.

Also, be careful when ordering a complete rear sight. They come in different heights(the depth of the square notch). Look close at the picture!

The "-#" is the latest engineering change made to the gun which helps date the gun.
I hope this helps? jcelect

Good Morning to you!

I have the one on the left, and the one I received is the one on the right!

So I assume that my -3 is the one on the left and -4 is on the right.

The one on the left looks Identical, with windage adjustment just like mine.

What is the best source for a complete sight set? I have seen blade replacement You-Tube videos, but that seem to be an adventure. Would prefer to replace the assy and then play with the spare.

Getting closer!!!

Danke,

You might try Numrich Gun Parts Corp. Go to their web site, search for S&W 686-3 rear sight.

The square tang sight, with which your gun is/was equipped, is no longer available as a service part from S&W. I have no idea what to recommend for obtaining one in Europe. Here in the states they can be found in the secondary market like eBay or Gun Broker or Numrich. Even if you find a source in Europe, be aware all square tang sights are not the same. The dimension from the front mounting screw to the elevation screw may vary, so measure yours and make sure that the replacement is the same.

The sight blades are the same regardless of whether square or round tang sight , but there are various heights, dependent on barrel length. You stand a better chance of replacing the blade, as opposed to the assembly. If you don't want to undertake the blade change, find a qualified gunsmith that will.

Good luck.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Thanks,

They seem to have the part, but no shipping to Europe,
will have to work something out.

Really like the S&WForum, good resource.

Welcome to the FORUM from Michigan! Shame you are having problems. 686-3 6" revolvers normally shoot quite well. I had 1, but made a mistake and traded it off. It's replacement was not too good! Bob

Brownells is a good source for S&W rear sight assemblies.

Default Problem Solved!

Thank you for the support and the email tips!

Found a Smith Tuner in Germany that had a lightly used 686-3 rear sight assy in his shop. He sent it, it fits and after laser foresight, I was in the middle in 5 shots.

Thank you again for the support !!!!
