Slim pickins on pre-lock 686's on Gunbroker right now. The few listed continue to follow the trend of higher prices. Should have bought as many as I could in 2019.

My 1st L frame was and is a 4" 586 no dash. Really liked it and bought a 686-3, 6". Had it a while, and took it to the gun show for a trade. Traded into a 29-2 nickle, 4" {even}. I was tickled until it went to the range. {that is another story}
So needless to say, I was without a 686. Went to the gun show, and saw a 686 on the table. It was a -6, Pro Series. Passed by it and bought a 66-2 snub.
Went back to the show Sunday, and traded into the 686. Was happy, and got rid of my last poly pistol.
So at least I got a 686 back back. Bob

Timing was everything, when I recently lucked into the 686-2. It was $479 plus tax. Definitely priced too low by the LGS!

Paid $840 for this 686-1 Silhouette six months ago at a LGS, no box and came with Hogue Rubber grips. I slapped on a set of Culina's I had laying around.

I think $800-$900 is pretty good deal right now. I look at the price of a new one then think I can find a prelock gun in great condition for the same price then I go with pre lock. One day in the near future that won't be the case

When I started reading this thread, I was wondering where you were finding these prices at!?! Then I looked at the date on the first post.
Prices here in U.S. central run from $800 for a well abused specimen to $1300+ for a nice one with box. And as barrels get shorter the price goes up.

Some examples, cut and pasted from truegunvalue.com. You can search for and extract pricing on any common firearm, copy information into spreadsheets, whatever you need for your own use...
  • The new value of a SMITH WESSON 686-6 pistol has fallen ($183.43) dollars over the past 12 months to a price of $795.20. Based on 243 units.
  • The used value of a SMITH WESSON 686-6 pistol has fallen ($50.64) dollars over the past 12 months to a price of $788.99. Based on 142 units.
  • The used value of a SMITH WESSON 686-3 pistol has risen $56.66 dollars over the past 12 months to a price of $748.10. Based on 88 sold.
  • The used value of a SMITH WESSON 686-1 pistol has risen $141.85 dollars over the past 12 months to a price of $1,042.11 Based on 73 sold.
Figures like this tell you what the average person is paying for any common gun. It does NOT tell you what premium the average forum member is willing to pay for a perfect example of a 686 with wooden target grips in its original box.

Why are people buying used 686s for only $7 less than a new one?

I am not sure what S&W's warranty policy is but they asked for a receipt the last time I sent a gun back. These days I want that option if there is something wrong.

Some brand new S&Ws do need to go back. But there are people that will try to sell a revolver with a problem instead of getting it repaired. And there is also a risk that the previous owner "improved" it is some way that both voids the warranty and causes a problem.

I am not afraid to buy a used gun but given a choice between a brand new one from a dealer and a used one at the same price will choose the new one.

Picked up this 686-5 4" 2 weeks ago. 1997, last year pre-lock.
Consignment priced @800.- paid $750.- plus tax & DROS.
Came w/ orig. hard case, speed loader & 100 rounds of .357.
Switched Hogue Mono Grip for a set of Herrett's Walnut Target Conversion.
Gave it a fair cleaning, will polish more later.
Hasn't been shot much, clean barrel. Hammer/Trigger, Cylinder all snug & tight.
Location: Southern Cali. All new L-frames priced solidly over $1k, mostly $1200.- plus.
I was on the fence, tried to talk myself out of it, but closed the deal on 3rd visit.

For one, I can't stand the "Hillary hole" in the side of the frame. I'll buy an older 686 over a new one any day.

Picked up this 686-5 (top of the photo) in the last week for $820:

Low round count safe queen with the slightest of a turn-ring on the cylinder. Came with original box and paperwork.

The 686-1 in the lower photo is one I picked up last summer for $650 - no box/paperwork, but in good shape. It's my primary range gun now, added Meprolight True-Dot sights to it for those that catch the strange blade in the ramp up front... :-)

I just picked up a 686 no dash 4" for $818 OTD in NJ.
Shoots very well, just a pleasure. I had one just like it back in the mid 80's.

My buddy just bought me a no dash M 4 inch for under 700.00. It needs factory stocks put back on it but is super clean. Looks barely shot. To say I’m beyond stoked is an understatement!

The 4 inch 686 has always been a TACK-DRIVER for me. It's the Goldilocks of all-purpose revolvers.

"If I could only keep one...?" I'd have to do somersaults to try and justify why it would be anything other than a 4" 686.

@Daveyc - Do you mean a 686 no dash, or is there a -0?

That would blow my mind if that existed. Again, reinforcing the axiom "The only rule is that there is no rules"...

If it is truly a 686-0, would you post a picture?

When I found my 686-5 DX, i had to go verify that they were actually made. And so it goes; i love learning new things about Smith & Wesson.

This is the thread just just won't die.

It strikes me that prices seem to have stagnated for run of the mill 4 and 6 inch 686's. My answer 2 1/2 years ago when this thread started was "around $700" and I'd give the same answer today. There was probably a bubble when the madness was upon us when everything was much higher, but no more.

I use Grab A Gun as my measuring stick for new price. They are at $919 ($959 MSRP) right now for 164224, and $949 for the 164198 ($979 MSRP) and have them both in stock. That’s a 32% increase in cost prior to covid and the craziness. I doubt any shows will be selling for less than the online guys.
Used prices for pre-locks are $1000 to $1200. Which in some places is keeping the price of used post lock guns up.

I picked up a 4 inch 686-6 yesterday for $600 that I though was a good buy. I wish mine didn't have the stupid hole.

I'm well aware it is not useful for US customers, anyway, just for curiosity: here in Europe a 686 / 586 is priced 650,00 * (700,00 USD).
Sometimes it happens a miracle: I bought mine at 300,00 * three years ago

Last 4" pre lock, I think it was a dash-1, in the box at a LGS was $950, and it sold in about 2 minutes. I haven't looked too closely for another 686, but my last S&W 28-2 went for almost $900, 99%, in the the box with paperwork, bought from the original owner who bought it in 1967. The other 28-2 I bought about the same time was $760, no box, in about 99% condition. I should have grabbed the 4" 686 that a friend's dad had, but I didn't like the weird grips (I have no idea who made them), and the price wasn't like, "Wow, let me go to the ATM" great. At this point, any pre-lock L and N frames in good shape are default buys.

Picked up a 686-3 classic hunter in the box for $700 from a private party 6 months ago. The price may have been a bit lower as 2 other guns were bought at the same time.

Brand new 686 6" 164224 shows $919 at Grab a Gun. When you click on “Grab a Quote” it is 803.99.
2.5" 164231 shows 708.99 In Stock.

Prices are still up, but I suspect they will go lower.

It seems like a supply and demand change is happining. There is a huge number of new ones available at those prices. I was able to pick up a slightly used 164224 6" for $400 less. I much prefer the pre locks but the price point made it doable to get a shooter.

Bob
Love it. I thought I was the only one who did ***** like this. (Bob also)

Supply and demand is absolutely changing. Covid and the 2020 riots shot the price of everything through the roof, then the war in Ukraine added to keeping the price of ammo through the roof. I was shopping for a 6” 686, in January 2020 GAG was selling them for $664.99 and had them in stock.

The economy is another factor now. The economy is down and inflation is up. I see a lot for sale in my area, but sales are slow. Those who bought in the last three years are trying to get back the big bucks they paid. It’s a buyers market now, but I suspect it will get even better for the buyer. Until the next drama of course.

Congratulations on your 686. It sounds like you found a good deal.

Depends. I've seen them go for 1200+ with box and paperwork online, and as low as 750$ which is what I recently paid to get my used 686 back. Depends on condition, dash number, add-ons, etc. I've seen as low as 600 to as high as 1500$

Currently, it is much cheaper to buy a used 686 here than buying new one. Buying new is about $1k bucks here. While used is around 8 or $900.
You can seriously save 2 or $300 buy buying a prelock, than buying a new one.
I've even seen the stores sell dash 6s for 900 and sell the new ones for much more.

I don't know why, or I haven't read much on this forum, Smith and Wesson's new price hike! And usually the forum would be first to notice these things. But performance center guns are now selling more than pythons and anacondas...

Or so I've noticed.

I bought a 686 way back when I was doing the recall work on them. Owner didn't want it, so i bought it. I also have this 586 that was really rough, but action was ok.
I sent it to S&W for a re-finish, and they did an excellent job on it. Since the re-finish, I installed a target hammer and a smooth combat trigger.
