Default Recommended Red Dot or optics on a S&W 500

What have you used for an optic on your S&W revolver? I added a Stainless Steel Weigand rail to it. My theory is that the optic is not as as important as the mount or rings, since it seems that they can probably fail before the optic ever does.

What do you recommend? What have you used?

I've been using a Burris 2x20 scope mounted in the Weigand system. I used 4 rings with the same base your gun has on it. The set up has worked well. The scope has seemed to take the recoil well holding it's zero even after taking the hit from my full house loads. The scope also has good repeatability. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it and it is very affordable.

on a 500... I'd pick something with a lifetime warranty lol. Sorry, no experience to help except for a Leupold 4x on a 629dx and 1pc mount that has always held zero etc.

Your theory would be wrong, check your fasteners regularly and keep them tight and your rings should never have any issue.

Your optics are are going to be tested to the limit.

Leupold scopes are lasting 6000+ rounds.

So far only 2 different dots have made more than 2000, Ultradot 30 and H1 Aimpoint on my X-frames.

Good luck and be safe

Nice setup. Now what we really need is for you to start with a cheap red dot, shoot it till it breaks keeping a shot count, and move up to another. It would be a great service to anyone looking at red dots to see which are the most durable. Just kidding.

So far, so good. 35 rounds. No issues with the Primary Arms on a S&W500.

This is good advice. make sure you rail is secured with red Loctite.

In most circumstances, I recommend blue loctite on guns. Blue loctite has a good amount of hold on small screws, but it can be broken loose with hand tools. Red loctite requires heat to break the bond. That is OK if you know exactly what you are dealing with, but for many people it gets them in trouble.

When I need to give people quick advice, I tell them "keep red loctite away from guns."

I only recommend red loctite in very special cases where the parts should be permanently attached, and I make sure the person knows a torch or soldering iron will be necessary to break the bond.

For pistol scopes, I've found the Leupolds have great eye relief and will hold up to any recoil. In reddots, I'm partial to Ultra Dots.

So far I have 35 rounds of 500 Magnum through my revolver with the Primary Arms Advanced Red dot. No issues, yet. I'll keep shooting and seeing how it holds up.

Is the Primary Arms the same as the Bushnell TRS-25? I have the TRS-25 on a 617 but find the dot hard to find, takes a lot of wabble some times. The Vortex Venom on the 686 is much easier to find the dot.

The Primary Arms is identical to a Holosun.

The shape, weight, battery life, and even footprint are very close to my Aimpoint T1 and H1.

Dot quality is the same. I have no issues seeing my dot. I don't turn the intensity up too high so as not to burn out my target.

I have it also on 5 other guns, but I have other Primary Arms optics, too. I've been pleased with them so far.

I have a Vortex Venom on my Glock 34. I prefer my Trijicon RMR Dual, more.

It’s still holding up well. Still has maintained zero.

The Weigand Rail Mount is very strong since it’s stainless steel, as opposed to aluminum. A narrower wide base also helps with the recoil.

From what I’ve read for scopes, I have seen people use two sets of rings, as you have.

Where on earth can I find this scope mount? I have the S&W Performance Center .500 w/the 7.5" barrel. I can't find this mount anywhere. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

It’s still holding up on my S&W 500 Magnum 5”. Primary Arms Advanced Microdot.

My rail is by Weigand which I bought directly from him. Get Stainless steel for the 500 Magnum, though.
