My Model 66-6 which came with blue plastic case, docs, & fired case dated May 28, 2002 has the 4" Heavy Barrel, product code 162706. Uncle Mikes grips were factory standard, at least on mine.
It is my understanding that this series was the last made with one piece barrels. The Model 66's made after mid 2002 came with 2 piece barrels until end of production in 2005.
When I got mine, there was an identical gun right next to this one, however didn't look as pristine and didn't have any case or docs, and it was with a 2 piece barrel, which just didn't tickle my fancy. I was also trying to reconcile my brain to accepting the infamous Hillary Hole, with the 2 keys, and the gigantic factory sealed Master padlock....talk about retention level 95!
Anyway.....the gun is terrific. Eats anything (brand and weight wise) in 38 Spl or 357 Magnum that we feed it. I say we because when my daughter (LEO) is home we like to compete with our Glock 21, Gen 4 in 45acp (her State issue, mine bought to keep up with her), AND the Model 66. Her state has numerous Mod 66's left over in the armory that the troops love to shoot and play with after qual sessions and she is really competent so I get beat usually with both guns....but hey...fun range time with family is plain fun so I don't care who wins, cause we both do!
PS: Hundreds, if not thousands now, rounds downrange and never a problem with the Hillary Hole, so if any of you are in need of 2 untouched keys, plus a massive Gorilla proof Master padlock in sealed sleeve...just let me know.

For someone whose forum name is "Colt", you sure seem to know a whole lot about S&W's! Great list.

About 7 or 8 years ago I bought a 66-7 with a 2.5" two piece barrel. I was a little leery because it was something I'd never encountered before. Still the price was right and the gun looked almost new (and has a pinned front sight which is important to me) so I bought it. The bottom line is that it has turned out to be one of the most accurate and fastest on target pistols I've ever owned. At least out to 20 meters. It would certainly be one of the last of my pistols I would ever sell.

As colt_saa's list shows, all Sc/Al alloy frame models have (2) or (3) piece barrels, AFAIK.
If we're expanding the list to include (3) piece barrel revolvers you can add the PC 325TR & the PC 460XVR snubby to it.

I guess it is a formal barrel, with pants, jacket, and a vest.

A two piece barrel assemble consists of a barrel shroud and a threaded barrel that has a flange on the muzzle end.
The flange is tightened against the shroud which tensions the barrel inside the shroud. This is very similar to the method used on the Ruger Redhawk revovlers.
A three piece barrel assembly consists of a barrel shroud, a barrel threaded on both ends and a nut/comp/cap for the muzzle end
The barrel nut/comp/cap is tightened against the barrel shroud which tensions the barrel inside the shroud. This three piece configuration is closer to the original decades old Dan Wesson design

Just wanted to add a picture of a 3 piece taken apart. But Colt saa beat me to it, while I was drive thru-ing my coffee!
Barrel. Shroud. Locking nut. 3 piece.

Thank you for all the answers, wiseacres and serious. The DW style was supposed to have consistent, repeatable accuracy. Does the S&W live up to that promise?

Yes, the Smith & Wesson implementation of the tensioned multi piece barrel assemblies has indeed created revolvers rivaling the Legendary Dan Wesson accuracy
The design works as well today as it did 40+ years ago
Both of my 5" 327s are astonishingly more accurate than other 357 Magnum N-frames. My 327 TRR8 has become one of my favorites
Smith & Wessons 460s and 500s are just amazing
Though I do still shoot my Dan Wesson SuperMags

Given the same barrel length on a 327 and on a 627, 5" and shooting them back to back for years, I can say with certainty, that the 327's multi piece barrel was always more accurate than the 627.
Hands down the 327 is my favourite, being the most accurate, easier to hold and being able to handle magnums better than it's all steel counterpart.

Correct Lou. I think you're talking about the 629-7 Magnum Hunters. The comp is also a 'nut'.

I remembered when you told me about them. If the comp is the locking nut, that makes em 3-piece barrels. Too.
Nice!

I had that mixed up in my memory as a 329 Hunter.
I should have remembered, I like that two tone finish it has
