Taking apart a new-to-me 686 NO DASH for cleaning and polishing, I'm noticing that the three side plate screws were buggered up by whoever had the gun before me, and that the three screws are each different - is this the way it's supposed to be with a 686? I ask because my Model 64 had two side plate screws the same, and the one that held in the crane assembly was different. What about the 686 side plate screws? And can anyone point me to a good source for quality S&W revolver parts? Thanks in advance for any help !!!

Numerich is where I have gotten what I need. They make many obsolete parts. The Yoke screw may need some fitting. I am sure others will weigh in.

Hmmmmm.....

I thought the screw nearest/under the grip is the odd screw.

On a no dash 686 you have 2 different side plate screws. One is a flat head for under the grip area. The other two are round head. It will likely be necessary to fit the one that holds the crane on. Brownells likely to have the screws you need. See the schematics. Same screws used for all SS K, L and N frames models of the no dash variants. If you use properly fitted screw drivers the screwheads will never bugger again. I use the Brownells S&W specific kit and considerable care.

Op, this is what you need for your no dash. JB is correct on the yolk screw with the plunger. That is the part you would find at places like Midway, and it will not fit.

Thanks very much for the warm welcome and the guidance about the proper sideplate screws, and right screwdriver set, for my S&W revolvers - all that will be on order later today. Being that I also have a S&W Model 65, the 686's internals are similar enough that I felt comfortable taking the gun completely apart - a few differences, obviously, but enough similarities to keep it enjoyable, versus frustrating. Some polishing and a thorough cleaning is also on my list. I fired a few rounds at the range after buying it, and the trigger is amazing - not sure if it's been worked on or just used a lot - it'd be interesting to know the history of the gun. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions - thanks for now!
