S&w 500 700 grain video
Threw together a quick video of me loading and shooting some 700 grainers for my 500. These were fun!

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. Afraid I’d be a flinching mess after a cylinder

Very useful video. Thank you.
By chance did you happen to record any velocity data?

Rich—this is a GREAT video. I suspect I don’t need to tell you but it seems in most gun videos the makers want to rattle endlessly for 5 minutes about what’s on the video. You got straight to business!
The only thing I would like to see/add is showing the bullet impacting the target—whether a paper target, watermelon, two-liter bottle or some other reactive target.

Thanks a lot! Yeah I like to get right to the point haha. I was only shooting paper and forgot to take photo of the target. I will post some water jug shooting or steel next time I get out to the range.
Unfortunately I don’t have a chronograph

Rich I have never mentioned on here before but when I was a kid I loved to reload. Life got in the way and I have not done so in at least 40 years. But I love reading the reloading section here and love seeing components I formally used.
H110 was one of my powders for magnum loads. I also used Bullseye for regular loads too. It tickled me seeing you use it. I think I used 22-24 grains (H110 not Bullseye!) in .44 magnum with 240 grain bullets.

Rich,
Nice presentation on your video
I also love H110. There is always a full jug plus the partial I am working from in my loading room. I do not want to ever get caught short
However, H110 is not the best powder for the heavy slugs in the big 500. AA1680 works quite well with the max weight projectiles
BTW, properly cast 700s (like from Matt) do not need gas checks. You can't get them moving much over 1400FPS using a full pressure load from a LOOOONG barrel
What many non-500 shooters do not realize when they are looking at images of our projectiles is that they are 1/2" across Think how long that makes them
These are the first cast projectiles I ever loaded oh so many years ago.
The little guy on the left weighs in at 450 grains while the big wadcutter on the right tips the scale at 725 grains. Since then I have gone to molds that drop projectiles a bit different from what is shown here. Many of my new molds offer the choice of solids or hollow points
Again for our non-500 shooters out there, when you unloaded those 700 grain projectiles from your revolver you put 1/2 pound of lead down range in those 5 shots
That is a pretty awesome thought

Jeremiah Johnson called. He wants his music back!
That load looks very manageable. I think my 350's have more muzzle whip. Nice job!

Well, if you have metric lead. Otherwise it's a couple of pounds.

Haha, I was wondering if anyone would recognize the music.
ColtSAA great info! I had a hard time finding load data for this. Thanks for the info. I just started loading for the 500. I’ve loaded a few of these 700’s but mostly 350 grain XTP’s and some polymer coated 330 grainers from Badman bullets. I want to look into something in the 500 grain range next.

A sealed 50 gallon drum full of water would be great.

56 grains of AA1680 pushed the 725 grain wadcutters to 1205 FPS from a 8 3/8" Model 500. It goes faster in my 12" T/C Encore
When I started working with the cartridge in 2002 there was no loading data at all.
We had lots of fun back then

That 700-gr is why S&W made the cylinder that long!
Great stuff.
Thanks.

That was a truly enjoyable video! I would love to know the FPS if you ever get the chance to run them over a chrono.

I’m not sure what barrel length but I’ve seen this load listed as around 1200fps

Or the first 20 minutes of the video is the gun hidden in the box with a preamble about the intricate philosophy behind them buying said gun.
