Default I have a chance to pick up a M13-3 tomorrow

Hey guys I have the chance to pick up a S&W M13-3 4in in the box tomorrow. The owner states that he doubts that it has ever been fired. So I'm going to meet the owner in the morning. Any feedback on this gun? I know it is a fixed sight, heavy barrel, but that is about all. I wish it were a 19. Feedback is welcome.

Model 13s are awesome. Some of us prefer the fixed sight option. Me being one of them. They handle .357 well, and are very shootable. I found a near mint example for my father in law and it's his favorite revolver. While some models like a 19 or 66 might bring more money, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a 13!

One of my favorites is a 3" M65, the stainless version of M13.

I was also hoping to find a 3 in. But I will at least see what he has. Fours can be nice as well.

The heavy barrel Model 10 is one of my favorite revolvers of all time. The added ability to shoot the occasional 357 allotment out of it is just the icing on the cake. You just can't go wrong with a Model 13.

I have 8 stainless Smith's with 3" or shorter barrels. Last Saturday at the local gun show I still picked up a 13 three inch. Paid too much or bought it too early, I couldn't pass it up.

For me at least, some handguns just fit my hand well. I'm not talking about laser-like accuracy, more like being able to quickly and consistently hit a 5.0 inch disc shaped target at 15 yards

In semiautomatic handguns, the Colt's Government Model and the Browning Hi-Power pistols consistently take the prize. For revolvers, the Model 13/65 - especially those with the 3.0 inch barrels are the winners.

Regards,

Dave

Well for the price that I am getting it for, I think I can live with a four inch version. I'll just pretend it is a 19.

A 4 model 13-4 was the last personal weapon I carried before the sheriff mandated only county issued weapons could be carried. I still have it.

Hard to pass on that old bluing new in box.
You'll still need to scratch that itch for an M19 it sounds like...and a 3".

If its a good deal, ok. If not I'd wait for the gun you really want.

I shoot my 13-3 4 inch gun a lot. Mostly 38s and it reminds of my first issued Model 10. Buy it and enjoy it.

I have two 686's 4in and 2.5in prelocks, and a 28-2 4 inch. This gun just kind of intrigues me.

I own a 4-inch 65 - 3 and a 3-inch 64-6. I really like the fixed sight bull barrel variants. I think the 65 does fine with 357's, I stick with 158 grain factory offerings and lighter recoiling reloads. If you plan on shooting it eventually you will probably want to paint the front sight a different color so it contrasts with the rear gutter sight. The trigger on my 65 is well broken in, very smooth and breaks like glass in single action. The balance on the model 64 with the shorter barrel is "just right". It would be awfully hard to pass up a nice blued model 13.

Well you have the L & N frames, as well as adjustable sights, covered. But no K in that lineup. Seems like a good reason to go ahead and buy....

Fixed sight S&W magnums can become a real obsession. I love 'em. Can't wait to see your new one.

If you handload it is fairly easy to have a fixed sight revolver shoot to point of aim. If you're buying ammo stick with 150-160 gr bullets and you should be fine.

Here it is. Only real problem is a slight chip in the stock panel on bottom. Other than that, it is about 90-95%. Now I have to decide if I'm going to keep it.

Mine looks just like yours. I bought it last year for about 330 bucks at a pawnshop. It's another gun that I haven't shot yet. I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend!
OP, you can't go wrong with a 4 inch 13! Great little guns and a joy to shoot! I have a 10-8 that looks just like my 13 and man it is a tack driver!

Okay guys I'm a little anal about my guns. So when I got home and posted the pictures, I thought good I will work on it later. Well, here it is four hours later. I have completely taken it apart changed the rebound spring and lubed everything. Then added Alamont grips. Now I need to go shoot it.

Go shoot that nice looking thing before you decide, more than once. Trust me, I don’t think you will want to get rid of it after, regard less of what you paid for it. Remember that the grips can easily be changed to fit your hand better and more comfortably. Like the model tens, that one is a keeper. Everybody outa have at least one! Glad you got it!

Theres a 13-3 at my LGS. Not quite as good as yours. Id give it a strong 90%. Theyre asking $699. I offered $550...

Waiting on word from the consignee.

Wait...I must be confused. I was just thinking this thread should be in the Pre 1980 section. The 13-3 at my LGS is pinned and recessed. I better double check.

I got a unfired M13 a few years ago and decided it is too nice to shoot so I got a M19. It is also too nice to shoot, so it is back to my beater M10 tapered bbl. Oh well.

Very nice. Im a big fan.

My 4 13-4 was what I used to qualify for my CCW. I liked it so much that last November, I added a 4 65-3 to the collection. (found them for $479 and $450 respectively)

Even though the 3" M13 is a good revolver, my preference is for the 4" barrel.

Default Model 13

She's a beauty Fishman; I agree with others - go shoot her.
My favorite .357 is my nickel 4" model 13-2. Gave my 3" 65-5 to my son; also have a 6" nickel 19-4, a 4" 66 and a 2.5" 686-5 seven shot. The 13 is my bedside gun so it goes to the range every time with other K frame .22/.38s.
