Default Black 4” 686-2 info...rare?

Hell, new guy to the site here. Trying to get some info on a black 686-2 two with a 4 inch barrel. I was told that it was an FBI issue with an only about 2000 made. Amazing shorter! Can’t find anything on a black except on Wikipedia. Any help?

Buy the gun, not the story.

S&W did make some 686's with a black finish. It was not very durable, and did not sell well. It was discontinued shortly after it was introduced.

The FBI did not issue 686's to my knowledge, they issued 13's with a 3" barrel, then onto the S&W 1076.

This summarizes everything I would say and know to be true!

Google 'midnight black' or what that was called, less value than a uncoated 686. That coating wears by looking at it. I saw one NIB a few years back and decided not to go for it.

I bought one when they came out. Ended up trading for a (non-S&W) Walther PPK/S plus some cash my way. Yes, the finish did wear quickly on it but my friend with the Walther really wanted it lol.

Here's an older thread with some good info:
686-3 Midnight Black
