Default New to me 940

Ever get something from Gun Broker that is better than you thought. Well lightning has actually struck twice for me. I cant prove it, but I'm pretty sure this revolver hasn't been shot outside of S&W. The S/N puts it early 1991, I think. The letter prefix is '91 but the numbers are lower than the range in my 3rd edition. The box was well taken care of, with all the extra stuff, and not a mark on any of the moon clips.
I've wanted one for quite a while but 3"ers rarely ever showed up till recently. I think i paid a fair price, considering the three inch guns were only made for three years I think.
I almost hate to shoot it, but I will. The best part, is that it fits nicely in my Kramer horsehide for my 60-3. Now I need to find a source for more 9mm moon clips.

P.S. I'm sorry, I just realized how horrible these pic are, after I posted this.

I purchased Ranch Product moon clips from Dillon back a few years ago when I bought my 2" 940. They worked fine. I found inconsistency in the extractor grove from brand to brand to be my greatest problem area. I had best luck with Winchester brass.

The 9mm clips from TK Custom work well, but a bit pricey. Does S&W not carry 9mm moon clips any longer? I bought my original set from them.

Thumbs up

That 3" version is a great find IMHO. I have a 2" 940, but have only seen a 3" 940 in the ferrous flesh one time. And I use to frequent a lot of LGS and gun shows.

I use the Ranch Products moon clips in the 940. The variation in extractor groove dimensions does make some cases easier or harder to load/unload in the moon clips. Just the nature of the beast with moon clips. I still enjoy using some revolvers requiring moon clips.

For better or worse I have a 3".

Ranch Products provides good clips at the most affordable price. After giving up on ordering across the internet I found calling them easy. S&W used to sell small packs of Ranch Products clips but at a much higher price. S&W probably still does.

While so many members here complained about hard extraction that a chamber reamer was passed around, I've never had that problem with brass cases. However, I suggest you do not even experiment with steel cased factory cartridges. It is the nature of steel cases. Steel cases from higher pressure cartridges require too much force to extract. Five at once is too much for S&W's easily bent extractor rod.

In an old revolver enthusiast's view 940s should have sold better than they did. I guess modern small autos gave them too much competition.

So I could occasionally enter a local snub nose match I had a Model 60 .38 Special cylinder fitted to mine. The man who runs it wants competitors to fire the Model 36s that they actually carry daily so one of his rules is no moon clips. The match is shot at such short distances that point of impact variations don't matter a whole lot. He puts old shirts in various colors over the torso shaped targets to add more realistic colors. The 940's silver sights work better blackened.

Thanks for the info on the moon clips. I didn't think about S&W, being out of production for so long. I looked at TK customs and a " bit pricey " is an understatement.
I took it out and shot it yesterday. So unfired or not, it is now. I only put half a box of Federal 115s through it. Only came with 4 moon clips, luckily I always cary my .45 case remover, it worked ok. I would liken it to shooting my PPK pain wise. Not something I would put a couple of boxes through just for something to do. I think I've just gotten so use to shooting light .38spls inthe J frames, the 9mms get your attention.

The little 9MM J-Frame revolvers do "get your attention". Some apparently think that because the 9MM cartridge is physically smaller than .38 Spcl. cartridge, 9MM recoil must be less in a little revolver. Not so, and a chronograph demonstrates why. Chronographing major manufacturer 38 Spcl., I've not seen any .38 +P that generates the velocity and energy of even standard pressure 9MM.

Some of the smaller, "Boutique", manufacturers list some very energetic .38 Spcl. ammunition that must recoil more than 9MM in the J-Frames, but I've not tested any of that yet.

I am glad that you enjoy your purchase and that a nice revolver will be properly cared for for now. I wanted one of those when I was actively collecting,so I know the allure. Wish you much safe fun!

Search S&W 191410000 for factory moon clips - they are still out there.
