28-2 Magnaport Stainless/Nickel?
Good afternoon. Looking for some insight on this pistol.
It's a 28-2 and these are the only 2 pictures I have. I haven't been able to find much information on it
Did Lew Horton or any other similar company make something like this or was the porting done after the fact?
I know they did make some brushed nickel but wanted to see what you guys thought. Not sure what it would be worth and if it had any collector value or mainly just a fun shooter. No box either.
Thanks

My guess is that the gun was sent to magnaport, and the finish is electroless nickel. The grips are nice. I would say this was not factory, and holds no real collector value, but should make a good shooter

Yeah, looks like someone ruined it .... or maybe saved it depending on the condition before they cut holes in the barrel and scraped off the factory finish.
Darn shame.

It appears to be aftermarket hard chrome, which is a dandy finish.
It would make a great shooter, if you like porting more than I do.

Thanks guys, that was what I was thinking to. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something special. Still going to try to pick it up (love the grips) but as a shooter.
Snagged these two from the same seller this morning - a 624 and a 24-3

The 28 also appears to be wearing round butt combats so the frame was modified as well. I've seen similar work (porting, rb of the frame and hard chrome finish) on other guns that I know came from Magnaport, they all also had a stamping on it reflecting such. Regardless that would make a handy "walking around the woods or in the mountains" gun lol.
Now those 2 .44s? Outstanding!!!

Welp, with your help and insight we came to an agreement on the 28-2 and this 57-1. From the pictures I think it has some freckling and the grips look messy but for $950 for the pair I figured they will both be fun shooters

I’d like to know where you’re doing your gun shopping! A one stop collection.
Very nice.

The Model 28-2 has had some work done to it. The porting, refinish and rounding of the grip frame are all post factory for that Model. I like the finish and have round butted a Model 28-2 of my own. Seeing yours, I may have to send mine out for a similar plating.

That gun looks like they ran out od 28 cylinders and threw a 27 cylinder on it. I have one that looks the same way

Pete,
This is the one I converted to 45 ACP. Rebored the barrel and fitted a new cylinder and frame lug. Action work and the grip frame work. My Foothills Revolver. Built in the 80s when nothing like it was being produced and the existing 4” ACP S&W revolvers were POR which translated to Priced Out of Reach to this beat cop.

I had a 28-2 just like that that I rebuilt in the 1990's.... worn Blueing so had it Brushed Nickel and Ported when Mag n Port offered that service for Wheel guns.

$950 is for the 57-1 and the 28-2. The 624 and 24-3 were more but still very reasonably priced, especially here in CA.
Thanks for all the insight guys, scheduled to meet up on Saturday to transfer the 57 and 28.

Neat piece and have seen similar done - it was quite the rage in the late 70's-early 80's.
Would have to question the need to port an N frame .357 though - there's hardly any load you can run through it that produces much in the way of felt recoil.

Looks a lot like my 29-5 mag-na-ported and hard chromed.

I have a 58 that was Mag-na-ported and a round butt. It came with a bobbed hammer. It also had a trigger job done too. I've replaced the bobbed hammer with an original. I don't know who did the work to round the butt, but it's not done very well. I shoot it quite a bit and it's really accurate. The trigger job is a real nice addition!

Full house Magnaport conversions were nice guns!
Besides the porting and electroless finish, they usually shortened the barrel, recut the forcing cone, did an action job, and cut a very nice benchrest-style conical muzzle crown.
Many of these were of the 3" roundbutt persuasion. But, they also converted 8 & 3/8" N-frames to very cool looking 7.5" guns.
Invariably, regardless of the specs, it resulted in a revolver that shot way better than when it was stock. Typically, these will have the Magnaport logo on the sideplate.

Ended up picking it up from him this morning along with some others. Since I'm in CA I'm still waiting for the 10 day hold on the 624 and 24-3 but today I jailed the 28-2 and 57-1 from above along with these two
940-1
60
The 57 definitely needs a good cleaning. Flitz the way to go? I know I need to do it lightly and Ren Wax after but any other product better to clean it up with?
Thanks guys

Damngato,
Flitz or Simichrome polish and a soft cotton cloth with make that Nickel 57 shine and also will remove the powder burn marks on the front of the cylinder.
I used Simichrome in the early ‘80s for my 65 and 681 S&W duty guns.it did a great job.

Strawhat,
Nice 28 you have there.
Do you like the smaller stock and the T-grip adapter with magnum loads?
I’m thinking of outfitting an N Frame in that manner...
