29-5 Classic Hunter
I went to the store looking for a Sig magazine for a friend, but they didn't have any. They did have this 29-5, 6" unfluted cylinder, Hogue grips, so obviously it came home with me. It appears unfired, but a faint turn line. It has the box and all items. The box says Classic Hunt. serial starts with BFW. In looking around, that seems all correct, except the front sight. Should it have an adjustable front sight?
Is there any reason not to shoot this? I don't buy guns to collect them, but if it's worth something as is, then I'd probably sell it and buy another to shoot.

I have one like it, front sight not
Adjustable but you can quickly
Change front sight blade.(Read the
Book for easy instructions).
Your gun is also drilled and taped
for a scope mount, under rear sight.
Very nice White Tail Deer Gun.

Having a gun you don't shoot, is like having a wife you don't sleep with....makes no sense to me...

Congratulations on your purchase. I bought a brand new one in 1993, built 1991, serial BFW 1312.
I replaced the Hogue with combats grips and the red insert front sight ramp with a plain black.
I have shot it regularly the last 27 years.
As far as I remember it was available with either the fixed ramp sight or with the adjustable silhouette sight

I bought a 629-3 new when they first came out and it came with the same sights that you have. The Classic Hunter in a 629-3 is not drilled and taped for scope.

Having it and not shooting it wasn't on the table. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything more than a run of the mill 29.
Seems like maybe less common, but nothing to worry about. I have a ton of bullets to load up, and figure what works good

Just my opinion but these are sought after (I am actually looking for one) and tend to bring more then another comparable model that is fluted, etc. Some of these were also a Lew Horton run, I'm not sure if it was the first run (1989?) or the second. It's not retirement or life changing amounts, but they usually will bring a $100-$200 more. Might be different in other areas. I think one batch was estimated at 3,000 and one at 5,000 but I am just going off of memory and that might not be right.

I also vaguely remember that Smith & Wesson held a competition for the public to name the gun and Classic Hunter was the choice

You stumbled across what to many of us we would consider a "Grail gun". By all means shoot it...and shoot it proudly! That is a very nice acquisition!
