Default M65 3" RB opportunity

A co-worker is bringing in an M65 3" RB for me to look at today. He inherited it from his father with a number of other guns and is looking to sell a few. I've been wanting another 3" M65 for some time, but the insane prices on them have kept it from happening.

Rubber grips, no box, bobbed hammer, but not sure what vintage... likely a -3 or later.

Co-worker hasn't given a price yet, but unfortunately, he's been looking at the popular auction sites. I've been watching these for a while, and have seen auctions close from the mid $600s to over $1400... Others have no bids in the $800s... crazy.

I'd like to think we can come to a fair price, but I'm hoping he isn't seeing $$$$$ after looking at some of the crazy auctions.

The only real trend I've seen is newer guns bring generally less...

Any input from the brain trust?

Location affects price. In California or Mass or Ny will bring premium

Just in my experience, once you've heard an acquaintance state they've 'looked online' at prices for some guns they're selling, it seems that 90+% of the time that means they've studied GB, and hardly ever 'completed auctions', just noting asking prices.....

Ordinarily that means any much sort of a fair deal has evaporated.

YMMV - good luck.

Not a lot of people want bobbed hammers, so that could potentially lower the value. Personally, I like them, and had the hammer bobbed and converted to DAO on the 3" 65-3 I had.

But like any gun purchase, especially a used gun, make sure to do a thorough inspection and make sure it's in good working order.

I'm no expert on the used gun market, but I'd have no problem paying in the $500-600 range if the gun is in good shape, less if the hammer is bobbed but still has the SA notch intact (I'd have to pay a gunsmith to convert it to DAO).

Just my opinion.

Funny, I bought a 65-5 LadySmith on GB almost exactly one year ago. It was listed as a buy now for $600. I think I got lucky and was looking right after it was listed. I bought it as soon as I saw it.

It was a great buy a year ago but a year like 2020 makes a huge difference. I've seen these go for crazy prices recently, over $1800. I agree a bobbed hammer is a minus but since I almost never shoot single action, I wouldn't let that stop me.

In my opinion, that piece - based on current pricing, will probably start at $850.00 and go from there. It would not surprise me if it hit the $1,000.00+ range. It’s on my grail gun list but I already own a Model 13-3, a Model 65-3 and a Model 64-3 all with 3.0 inch long Barrels, so I’m not greedy.

Good luck,

Dave

While I am not a fan of S&W fixed sights (mostly due to my eyes), the 3" RB K frame is about the peak of the pile in a carry revolver.

Well, I got to look at the gun... it's an early -3 with what looks like a DIY hammer bob (S/A not neutered), Pachmayrs, and it's a little rough, but lockup is good. Looks like someone shot it about a year ago and never cleaned it.

In my mind, $600-700 gun, even with current pricing craziness. Guy says he 'hasn't had time to research' yet and wouldn't give me a price, so no deal today.

Seems inconsiderate and manipulative on his behalf - I'd let him keep it and find a nicer specimen - may seem small minded but I hate buying guns from people I can't respect

I have a 65-5 with a 3" barrel. I bobbed and installed a hammer I ordered on-line, but have not removed the 65's SA capability.

I keep the original hammer in a bag and marked as such in my parts box in case my wife decides to sell the 65 after I am no longer capable of protesting.

I've got a nice 3" 65 marked BRPD that I bought at a gun show a few years ago for $400. I think I'll hang on to it. The good thing about a stainless Smith is if you get one with a little wear most of it can be polished out of it. I don't feel undergunned when I carry the 3" 65 because I'm pretty sure I'm gonna hit the target with the first shot. I still carry a speedloader just in case.

I probably made it sound a little snarkier than it really was... I was a little irritated because he had time to do that beforehand.

He called me later with a reasonable price and I agreed. I'll post pics after the deal is consummated tomorrow.

Congratulations! I haven’t seen a 13 or a 65 in probably 10 years.

The 3" Model 65 with bobbed hammer is a good thing:

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

Well, I guess the barely fired 3" RB M65 I bought three years ago for $475 wasn't a bad deal, was it?

Of course he's "had time" to research it. Took me 30 seconds to look up an active auction on GB that's at $750.00 and my bet is it's in better shape than your coworker's Model 65. Perhaps he just wanted to see any drool factor showing the gun might prompt.

It's funny, what we like & pay big $$$ for and would pass on or be tight with the funds. I have a ANIB 64-3 picked up a few months back (am in CA) for $495.00. Sort of the 65's weak sister, barely, but went for alot less. OTOH, paid way, way too much for a 940 - when a 640 probably works just as well.

Buying Smiths kind of takes away from my ability to criticize the girls and their shoe buying habits.

Very nice - are the grips modified S&W factory combat? I generally go with service & BK adapter, but those are top notch.

Nice 65! Grips are about perfect...

This won't be my first M65... had one long ago that was my daily carry for a long time, bobbed, DA only and polished. I sold it at some point, then missed it and replaced it with a PC M13 quad ported that I never really fell in love with. Liked the gun, hate ported guns for carry... Too bad I didn't keep it, 'cause that PC 13 is now worth about 4x what I paid for it.

Yes - They were a pair of combats that were modified to boot grip style long ago.

Handful of years ago, I bought a M65 3" off of GB just before they were starting their upward climb. IIRC, it was high-$300's.
It was a consolation prize to myself for selling a M66 3" some years before for stupid-cheap.

Only issue was some nimrod had polished this 65, which I guess I'll never quite understand. Kinda like the gold plated hammer/trigger/cylinder release thing.
Did end up putting some near-perfect size and design Thai grips on it and it's seen a lot of EDC and HR218 quals.

One day, I'll tend to the finish with some 3M pads and correct the finish on it.

Shown here with a new-at-the-time Lobo Avenger scabbard.

Back in '70s when I was a young deputy, another deputy had a new 4" M66. Whenever he had any down time at the office, he would use Simichrome polish on a rag on his revolver. When he finally got done, months later, that M66 looked like a shiny new nickel M19.

Yep, remember a young guy on my department doing that back when we all carried M66's.
A polished SS anything will show every little nick and ding that comes along.
My polished 65 shows some marks on the top strap that look exactly like handcuffs were affixed to it a time or three - and old expedient safety practice taught long ago in LE for storage and securing.

Deal is done... $600... he's happy, and I'm happy. I believe it's a fair price given the condition, but in the current environment, I would have paid a little more. I was fortunate that he included 4" M65s in his auction research, not realizing the premium 3" guns are currently bringing.

I want a shooter, so it's pretty much what I was looking for. As I noted in my earlier post, lockup is great... most of the challenges are cosmetic.

Anyway, pics:

Off to the workbench to take off the awful grips, and tear it down for a good cleaning...

Looks good to me. I think you did well.

From looking at the pictures, if that hammer bob was DIY, it seems well-done.

After a little elbow grease, the ol' girl cleaned up pretty nice. I added a set of suitable grips and an adapter from the grip box. They'll do until I choose a proper set of grips for it.

I believe it has been bead blasted at some point in its life, as it's definitely not the normal brushed stainless finish. Should be easy enough to have it re-blasted if I choose to.

Now I need to find time to get it to the range for a test firing...

Very nice. Mine's wearing a set of Thai grips that I reshaped and refinished to my fancy.

It wasn't properly polished, so the sanding lines from the dremel are still visible. Doesn't show well in pics. I took some 400-600-1000 paper to it and gave it a quick polish, which improved it, but it's going to take a little more work.

WOW! Great looking gun after you cleaned it up. And $600 was a fantastic price in today's market.

Congrats. Is the thumb release screw blue? You might want to replace it with a stainless one.

Finally got this one out to the range, after fitting some Precision Gun Specialties Hideout grips. Not the prettiest grips in the world, but perfect for a working carry gun. Rounds are Buffalo Bore 140gr solid copper HP 'short barrel' .357, my current go-to carry load. Not sure how I ended up with 9 rounds on this target...

OK for controlled pairs from the ready at 10yds, I guess. I remember when I could have one ragged hole shooting at this distance... my eyes ain't what they used to be...

And the double action isn't quite there on this gun yet... needs some more work. Still, it turned out to be quite the nice pickup.

FWIW, PGS Hideout grips are my favorite RB K-frame grip. I had the same kind as yours on my 3" 65 and 2" 64. I've got small-medium hands and they fit me very well and concealed easily when carried. I've got the J-frame version on my 642s right now.
