Possibly going make my 1st used revolver purchase, but would like some input and advice.
Looking for the following from all of you that know way more than I do about S&W revolvers.

- Ship date Serial # AYM3315
- Estimated value
- What digits on yoke mean (B10 & 61X94)
- If I am looking at the S&W Blue Book correctly it looks like the
condition value is being placed around 98% based on listed
price? Personally the holster wear looks a little much to me
and the grips are not original. Is the asking price fair? $689.99
I think this revolver falls under the "Classics" Distinguished
Combat Magnum. Yes\No?

Revolver is a 586-1 w/modified "M" stamp. Adjustable rear site, no white outline. Red ramp front site. Lockup is tight, Barrel and cylinders look good inside, no top strap damage.

It's a fair price here in November 2020. The last S&W Standard Catalog came out 4 years ago, so the prices are not necessarily accurate. You're right, it's not a 98% gun.

The numbers on the yoke are for assembly and no longer mean anything.

It's a Distinguished Combat Magnum. There's no "Classics" category that applies here.

Without a factory letter, there is no way to provide you a shipping date. However thanks to tables that are listed in the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson we can guesstimate the date of manufacture to be 1987

In today's market that is a reasonable price for a Model 586 in good working condition

Some of my best deals have come out of Pawn Shops. See if they will deal with you on price

It looks like a good shooter but, with the bluing loss it really IMO puts it at $5-550 tops...I bought one LNIB also an early 4” model 586 last winter in Dallas/gun show for $700 and have seen others similarly priced..
....the revolver you posted looks decent but high priced again IMO....that being said, if you just must have a 586 and haven’t seen any around, then you’re not getting scorched too bad-but I think if you look you will find one in same condition for less or better condition for about the same or a little more.....many folks think that you won’t find them for under $800 to $1000 in newish condition but it just isn’t so-they are out there...

Just acknowledge that purchasing one revolver means there are five more on deck over the next year ready to be purchased and belonging to these forums will enable an addiction fast! Set a budget now and be prepared. If your lucky, the lack of ammo and rising costs of firearms will slow down your shooting and purchasing. Good luck!!

Nice gun. Yeah, the price seems a bit steep, but...

If you’re going to spend more time shooting it than showing off with it, it’s probably a nice buy if you could get it for just a bit less. Just looking at the bolt notches and the blueing on the cylinder, I’d guess it’s not been used much. Maybe an ex-cop gun? I bought one locally several years ago in almost identical condition (appearance), even with the same grips. It was a ex-PD gun from a couple of cities away from me. About 35-miles as a crow flies. Almost certainly very little actual use, but the same holster wear you see on that gun.

Be sure to check timing, if you are allowed, and inspect the bolt notches and ratchet. A little endshake can be fixed easily enough. In this day and age, $600-$625 for that gun wouldn’t hurt me, if all is in reasonably good order. Don’t forget that often a thorough cleaning will help with minor timing issues. Built-up crud is not a friend of a double-action revolver.

I'll bet the pawn shop has $250 tops in that gun, probably less. Offer them $500 cash OTD and see if they bite. The older 4" model 586's in good condition are getting harder to find. You can't go wrong with that choice. Just depends on how bad you want it. I know on many occasions I have paid more than what the gun was worth, but I had to have it. Hope it works out for you.

Good negotiating approach. Settle at $550 to $600 for a better deal. That gun has too much wear and the original walnut grips are missing to command the asking price. Not much bluing on the ejector rod or yoke spindle, so it's been cycled a fair bit, but no reason it shouldn't be tight and a good shooter. I could be wrong, but I didn't think they ever shipped them with a red ramp front sight without a white outline rear.

Welcome to the forum. I agree with the others, price is a little high due to cosmetic condition. I’d feel like I made a good deal if I could get him down to $600 out the door including tax and background check. Make sure you pull those grips off and inspect it for corrosion in areas hidden by the grips. It’s a great gun to jump into the revolver arena with. I really like the look of the full underlug on the barrel, though some don’t prefer it. It’s pre-MIM (metal injection molded) parts, so that’s a big plus in my book.

My rule of thumb when I owned my gun store was that you always make your money on the buy, never the sale...You have one opportunity to buy the gun at the price you must live with...Every gun is going to sell for whatever price it sells for, but the chance to buy it in the first place only happens once...There are many opportunities to sell, but only one to buy......Ben

The date on the tag seems to indicate its been on the shelf a while. In today's environment thats uncommon. I'd take that as an indicator that even in today's market it's over priced. Good luck.
