Yes it is 8 3/8" They made the Classic DX in 6.5" and 8 3/8" and a few in 5" The 5" is the least common. I see they still make the Classic in 6.5" but I don't think it comes with 2 sets of stocks and all the different front sights.

I have the same model, same barrel length. When I first shot it from a bench, I was astounded at its accuracy. Maybe I'll post a picture this afternoon.

Regards,
Andy

OP, That's a sweet gun. I know because I was fortunate enough to pick one up a few years ago. I got the complete package except the previous owner swapped the rubber Hogues for Pachs. What a great shooting gun.

Terrible cell phone pic from when I brought it home.

That's the same exact gun I shoot for Met. Sil. It will shoot 6" +/- groups at 200 meters if I do everything right.

Love the 629 Classic and Classic DX! I've owned a 6.5" Classic for 20 years now and like many other have commented , the accuracy is quite remarkable!

I visited the Smith & Wesson factory back when they were making the DX model. I showed up unannounced and asked if I could take a tour. The gate guard directed me to a small building nearby. The lady inside made a phone call and asked if I could wait 15 minutes. I said I was 3000 miles from home. I could wait. Right at 15 minutes the phone rang and she told me to walk up the driveway to the main entrance where I would be met. There were a guy waiting for me and took me on a tour from the bar stock to the frame forging machine to the CDC machinery, stock building and the test fire range. He told me this is where security was highest since the guns were not yet serial numbered. He told me that revolvers, specifically 629s, were tested for accuracy. The best ones were marked as DX. After a nearly two hour tour I thanked him and asked him if it was part of his job to do tours. You could have knocked me over with a feather when he told me that he was the CFO.
