Default 500 performance center locked new in box

Picked up brand new 500 (170231) today. Cylinder release is stuck, cylinder will not turn. Trigger lock is unlocked. Never been fired, as I cannot even open it. Hammer is supposed to be chrome, but looks painted and looks like it has been dry fired many times. What do I do?

Picked it up from your FFL, or at a store? I would not have accepted one like that.

Send it to the factory. They will fix and most likely cost you nothing.

Welcome and sorry for your troubles.

The hammer and trigger on these are case-hardened, so the former appearing "painted" is probably normal.

With older standard S & W revolvers the usual cause of this problem is a loose extractor rod tying up the action, but the 500 and 460 don't use the rod as a locking point. If the thumb piece (cylinder release) is fully forward and the gun doesn't unlock, I agree with sending it back to the factory to be sorted out.

Was there a turn line on the cylinder when you first held it and was the plastic piece still at the cylinder's rear?
Can you bring it back where you bought it and have them
check it's functions?
I'd spray/drop some oil in the front/back of cylinder, the crane and cylinder release.
They can be a bit stiff to open as it's a massive piece of hardware and has a bearing up front that might not be moving.

I'm headed to the shop after a cup of coffee and will take a picture and post it.

Here ya go.
My 460/3.5" was a bit stiff at first and the 8.375" not as much but still stiff compared to Ks and Ns.
Both had a red plastic washer at the cylinders rear.

Last gun I bought a few months ago, Ruger SS Officer, was bone dry and I ran a very fine stone along the rails etc, cleaned and oiled it and it's wunderbar.

Hope you can get it sorted out and not have to ship it back.
Brogan maintenance to be avoided.
