S&W did make one .22 LR N frame, a much discussed Registered Magnum that is in the SCSW and it's rumored they made a few .22 LR New Century or first model N frames. Some years ago a member replied that he had one of the original triple lock .22 LRs but did not post a picture.
Assuming it is accurate, I'd love to have a .22 LR conversion like yours.

4” Model 65.
I wanted to say the Model 17 or 18, but the inclusion of “all around” means to me the need for more horsepower on occasion.
Disclaimer: I’ve never handled a 619 or 620 but maybe they could win my heart.

I made a living disagreeing with attorneys, and I've done it all over America.
Once upon a time I'd have said a Model 19 4" but after I acquired a 3" 686+ I call that that the "everything you need, nothing you don't" revolver.
I actually thought I replied to this but I couldn't find the post so there....M686+ 3".
And I'll provide the picture.

Yes you are right of course.
It is very accurate. Better than any 17 I tried, and they were very accurate.

Got one and I'm not giving it up .................. that said;in my "Burb of the
Burgh" my 3" 66 with Spegel Boot grips is more practical carry gun.
And I have to admit when out in Penn's Woods with a revolver I'm more likely to take my 686 4" round butt, no dash,Spegel extended Boot grips, carried in a Bianchi 111 Cyclone Cross-draw.... than the 681. I've had the 686 since 1986.... my 681 only about 15 years.
But I admire your good taste and profession.....

Great question....
This will create quite a stir at the Thanksgiving dinner table tomorrow.
I do equate this to naming your favorite child ( or wife )
I have fam members and friends who swear by the old school 442, pictured on the left But they are heathens...The shrouded hammer makes it a simple conceal and it is down right a 101 level revolver, its a no brainier and it works...
OP - my answer is the 686 ( the handsome fellow on the right)
Its downright fun to shoot
bottom line - I much prefer the bottom feeders.
that how pops raised us and what we had available to shoot as lil' ones....

I agree. That's why I mentioned the .45 Super. It is as powerful as a .41 Mag, but with a larger diameter bullet. It should be adequate for anything we have in the East, even if the .44 Mag is preferable in the West.

There's a seven shot 686 in the drawer next to my puter, but it's hard to make a decision with so many "favorites." Anything in .41 magnum is also nice.

Take a stainless N frame, round butt the somanagun and put a 3 inch barrel on it. Chamber it for 45 Colt, you know the long one. Make a great all around carry gun. Most likely take care of business in the U.S. and be hand loaded for as needed

....in addition to most of the above mentioned, I have to nominate a couple candidates....for the 3 9/16" 40/10mm S&W Model 610, and the 4" 8-shot 327 PC 38/357.

At 2am when it's all on the line, the 4" 19/66 is the best police revolver ever made. I will go a step further and say it's the best police sidearm ever made.

Model 10 no dash .38 4" heavy barrel. A hardware store police trade in when I bought it. Had it in the late 70's, shot anything through it, always accurate, sorry I don't own it today.

A pretty strong argument could be made for the 686+ Mtn. Gun. It has the best features of a number of other models.

I would have to say a S&W model 686-1 4inch barrel, a S&W model 28-2 4 inch barrel, and a S&W model 27-2 5 inch barrel. The reason I list the above Revolver is Because these 3 will take a study diet of the hot 357 Magnum loads. I have carried the 28-2 and 686-1 on duty. They also make a good club if you have to use them for that. Just my humble opinion.

I've read the majority of answers.
And while I did not tabulate nor
keep a count on which models
were named, I do have a conclusion
to what is the best all around S&W
revolver:
It's every revolver Smith made in the
last 70 years.

+1 on the 681:
Although an argument can be made for the CS1 too:
And the 60-10 should be considered when you factor in concealed carry:

The criteria was “The finest all around revolver ever made by S&W.” That would be the 27-2 or earlier.

Deep down, we all know that it is the Model 28, but I suppose that it is necessary to discuss all the fakes and pretenders.

Hmm, from a practical standpoint I'd opt for the 442/642, 640/640-1 J frames, Models 10, 13, 15, 19, 64, 65, 66 K frames, and the 58x and 68x L frames up to 4". I have a passion for the N frame, however, so any Mountain Gun or 4"-5" Model 27, 28, 29/629 gets an automatic thumbs up from me. For a formal barbeque or parade nothing beats a nickel 29 for show. For range and field I like my big .44's made in the mid-1990's (29-6, 629-4).

357 Magnum is greatest cartridge ever invented followed very closely by the .44 magnum.
So the best gun is a 357 magnum. My choice of versatility all around would be a model 66/19 4" or a 586/685 4". If I had to pick I would take the 66 over the 686.
A 4" 44 magnum mountain gun could also be considered as the champion too.

The s&w m65 is similar to a ruger Police Service six both 357 and slotted rear sight. I like my magnums on the heavy side.
In ‘74 I started off with 357 magnums. Over a decade ago I’m back where I started with 357 magnums.

Another vote for a4” or 3” 686. I have and like K frames but for an all around do it all Smith, I prefer an L frame.

It’s marked Colt. I’m guessing someone manufactured it for Colt.

My first thought too - unless the standard of 'finest all-around' is meant to include possible use in the fields and boonies, or along the river banks of Alaska, where the big bears roam.
Then, for me, it would be the S&W M&P Model 58 in .41 Magnum, ... 'loaded for bear,' of course.
For personal or home defense, the cartridge's milder 'police load' is fully capable of handling the 2-legged predators who prowl the urban zones, thus making the 4" M58 a truly versatile 'all-around' wheelgun.

For me it comes down to two contenders: the 4" Model 19 and the 6-1/2" Model 29. IMO, no other revolvers have better weight ointability ratios.

Highway Patrolman is a great gun but open it up to a 4" model 24-3 in 44 Special is my pet carry piece, Just put the 27-2 3.5' up to keep in the shape it is in for my Grand rugrats.

While I don't disagree (I adore my pre-war magnums), I would have to note that another contender may be the New Model 3. It positively oozes "fine", in a way that's impossible to describe to anyone who hasn't handled a high condition example, or better yet, fired one.

Nothing matches the 686-4 seven shooter 4" barrel. Solid, tough, thick forcing cone and will last several life times. The Model 65 is vey close to it.
and no I do not have the 686-4 seven shooter in 4" barrel, but it is the Holy Grail in handguns.

I'd have to go with my non-dash 686 4" to qualify for this forum.
