Is there not a chopped barrel picture thread?
Can I start a thread with pictures of chopped barrels provided there isn’t already one? Hopefully, before the end of the year, I will be sending a 4” N frame off to get professionally chopped to 3”.

That is not what I had in mind, but I would like to hear the explanation. I’m guessing someone was making some 2” barrel Fitz special type applications.

I will start. This is my Mk II, barrel cut to 3.25" and the cylinder was modified for .45 Colt. The grips are Grashorns. It is my only S&W with a cut barrel.

Far and away we find the 1917 45 Military models with chopped barrels the most. Do a search for 1917 and another for chopped barrels, you'll find a plethora of chopped barrels, both professionally and home grown.

Here's a chopped and reblued .38 S&W Safety Hammerless. It was given to me back in the '70's, and the Roper grips on it are worth more than the gun.

Where to Start.......
This one usually gets comments
a 3" shrouded model 13
a 3" model 17-8
a 3" model 617
a 3" round butt, fixed sight, model 29, 'cause Smith only made 3 of 'em
a 3" model 19-7
sometimes, it's not a chop, but a swap
a 38/44 Heavy Duty 3-1/2"
a 17/19 Frankengun, model 17-2 with a 2-1/2" model 19 barrel
I pulled a 6" off this 29-4, & fit a new, never installed 5" barrel.
I chopped the slide, chopped & threaded the barrel, moved the front sight on this Rock Island
Hope these help with your chopped barrel thirst.
Ned

The 629 4" started out at 6.5" and the 686 3" 7 shot at 6". I like them better this way. I'm going to round butt the 686 one of these days.

A couple amputated Colts. A renickeled chopped 5" Colt SAA .44-40, and a 1919 vintage 1917 .45 ACP. That is a very stylish front sight on the 1917 said to have been made from a "hose cutting blade". But it's like a dull butterknife to my fried eyes. At 15 yards standing two hand shooting double action aiming above the black and to the right a little I was able to lob 5 shots in the black. Bottom shots on target was aiming dead center from a rest single action to sight in. I was pleased with this big bore belly blaster.

Here's a couple that came my way. Model 1917 D.A. .45 that was chopped, bobbed, and round-butted; and a sweet .44HE 3rd Model Transitional with matching magna stocks that was chopped just forward of the dingbat rollmark. Custom holster courtesy of forum member VM.

Uberti 1849 Wells Fargo chopped to 2” with a 32 S&W conversion added cause I could. No front sight. Sights can get you killed at close range.

Nice one! And it doesn’t have a round butt added which I can’t stand. In the book “Gold Dust and Gunsmoke” there’s a chapter on Gold Rush dueling and in one case two guys used .31s like this in a bar room duel. Following the rules of counting, aiming, and firing. The winner and wounded loser made up and had a big party afterwards.

I guess this one qualifies: 25-2 Jovino. Started life as a six inch square butt, now 2 5/8's round butt.

Here is an oddity.....Model 58 with a model 29 cylinder and barrel. The barrel has been chopped, profiled, and has a new front sight added.

Good eye. Yes sir, it is. New, in the box, unfired since it left Jovino's.
I was hoping for a 657 version, but could never find one, so I settled for a 44 Mag version.

Do shotguns count? I've got a few...
But my only revolver that's been chopped is this Colt New Service. It dates to 1916, and began life as a .455 Ely, re-chambered to .45 Colt somewhere along the way. The DS wasn't chopped, I just wanted a shot of my oldest and newest Colt revolvers together.

No sawn off shotguns?
I chopped this Mossberg 500 30" to right around 19", the end of the last legal rib. Tapped for a bead and Duracoated. Shown with a spare 28" with choke tubes.

Model 1950 Target .45 ACP/AR, Pre Mod 26, cut to 4 ¼” and look exacrtly like factory:
Mid '20s era HFT. The barrel had been shortened to 3 3/8" due to a bulged barrel:
Model 34 New I frame with 3 1/2" barrel replacement for the 4" barrel:
