Default 686 info

First time poster here, (joined about 5 minutes ago after an hour of lurking) and I must say, the knowledge here is outstanding!

I have a 686-5 that I've owned since the late 90's. I've been trying to "date" this pistol, but to no avail.

Inside the yoke is "CEP****" and below says "686-5". The "CEP" number on the frame matches the yoke. (If that makes a difference.)

From what I've read on a few other posts, I'm guessing it's around mid-late 90's. I'm probably wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.

I appreciate any help you folks may have.

Thanks Bama!

EDIT: Having taken my memory for a quick run, that makes sense now!

Hey no problem.
Is that your only S&W? Hang around here a while and it probably won't be.
There's guys here that have forgot more about S&Ws than I'll ever know but reading about them and seeing the pictures has me wanting more.

JB - Believe it or not, this does NOT have a lock. Possibly an early model?

Bama - If you count my Walther P99, I have 3 Smiths. Just bought a new 66 Combat Magnum a few weeks ago and have yet to fire it. I'm on the waiting list for the elusive TRR8 right now.

Welcome Jules-This is a great place to lurk. I used to work for a company in Columbus and spent a lot of time there in the 2000’s. My son still lives there. I’m guessing you are seeing snow right now. Be safe and come back.

Jim

The -5s are pre lock guns. The -6s got the lock.

JB, the standard catalog states the internal lock work was changed with the -5, the internal hammer and trigger lock was changed with the -6.

As far as I know the 686-6 was the first introduction of the hammer lock. Not sure if the 686-6 was the first introduction of the MIM parts?

What's so dreaded about the locks? I have several guns with locks & never had a problem with any of them. Now I have to admit they do look better with no lock. Other than looks I don't see a problem with them.

I was just asking a question about the locks. Didn't mean to stir up anything.

Don't feel too bad. The locks are one subject that get people riled up pretty good.

I personally am in the side of hating them hard.
