Default A Christmas wish

S&W Holding Company announced that with declining firearms sales, the elimination of the internal lock on all S&W revolvers, as a cost saving measure, is being implemented model by model as existing frame inventory is assembled into finished firearms. It is forecast that new lockless revolvers will sell for under $600 retail. Additional details will be available in the Fourth Quarter Financial Report.

For now: 8-3/8" at top, 2nd is 7-1/2" that I mailed in a letter request from Roy, 6" , 5", and a 3" that was sold to MBliss and is posted with new grips in Post #1.

Here's my "one and only", thus far:

629-3, 4" bbl.

I carry it IWB, on occasion.
Today was such an occasion.

Default Magna Classic

Here is my 629 magna classic. I think one of the best looking SW revolvers. It shoots very accurate and has less recoil due to weight.

This is my favorite one, a 629-2E for endurance package. It is a 'transitional gun', made in very low numbers only in 1989. It is 'rare' or 'uncommon'.

I always thought this was cool, because at the time Ruger was saying they had the strongest and best product and S&W's advertising was basically saying that just because it's big, doesn't make it the best.

With the back and forth, they released the 'endurance' package, which all would have later on.

For a while, there was debate if the guns were marked with the 'E'. It has also been debated if they are Lew Horton guns because it has the same product code as the Classic Hunter. When I called LH, the person at that time told me that they didn't have records of it, but that didn't mean anything because their info. started in late 1989.

My gut feeling, that is, not data-driven, is that there were around 500 marked this way.

I have been offered more for the grips, then I paid for the gun. "Believe it or not". Doesn't matter, not for sale at any price, yes, including multiple zero's.....

I don't have but the one.
Was searching for a 4" 686 or GP100 and wound up with this 629-6. Still looking for a 4" 686 or GP100.

My only 629, a ND. If I read the SCSW correctly this was made in the first month of 4-inch production. Back then this was indeed my Holy Grail, but my disposable income was less then as well. All things come with time, and some get better with age.

And a nice one it is at that. Good to see you were finally able to pick it up. I’ve been waiting for you to post it over on NYguns.

My .44Maggie babies... Despite the 3" barreled examples... they are still fantastically accurate out to 100 yards and are better than I am still... even with factory Prvi-Partizan's "Heavies" and especially so with Federal "Fusions" Hornady's "LeverEvolution" , and anything from Buffalo Bore, and Underwood's offerings.

Forgive the vintage 18.5" Ruger M44-Carbine... It's such a great "Brush-Gun/Shooter" that I felt like I had to include her. She's my dedicated Carolina Hills Deer Rifle and is dope'd in at POA/POI @ 150 yards and good to 200 yards with only a 1 hash mark "hold-over" on the Scope. Hardest hitting and flattest shooting .44Magnum I've ever known in a compact 4+1 semi-auto capacity, lightweight package!

Even @ 200 yards Underwood's 305gr Hard Cast "Keith's" seen in the Steel Silhouette Below... they were still "Peen-ing" the AR-500 Plate which is insane.

HamHands, thank you for posting the Ruger in .44. Great gun. It is on my list of when I see one locally I will buy on the spot. Great shooter and practical as a deer gun in brush.

The only one I have currently, and the first I had. 629 no dash, P&R. Someone worked the trigger on this that knew what he was doing. Trigger is as good as any Colt I've ever held. Dressed with Culina Cocobolo.

That 12" barreled beauty is a 629-5 Extreme Hunter.

I do not know a whole lot about it, but I liked it when I saw it. It has no lock and it was tastefully engraved when I bought it. I do believe that they are less commonly encountered (I have in my notes that there was only 416 of them made). That said, if you do a search on the Forum you can find more info on them. This is the only S&W revolver that I know of that shipped from the factory with a 12" barrel. Here's a link to a thread has a lot of great info, and where I learned a bunch about this unusual S&W .

629-5 Extreme Hunter Found a Home!

I also posted a few more pics here showing the engraving in more detail:

Twelve Inches of Engraved 44 Magnum Charisma

It is a fun gun and a "bigger than life" attention getter when I show it to anyone. I look forward to shooting it soon.

Richard,

I appreciate the feedback and commentary. I must have been asleep when these were released. Nice guns, everyone. Good show.
