Revolver carry Speedloader or Strip?
As the title says, I am interested in whether more folks carry Speed loaders or Speed Strips for your extra rounds and why? Or do you just carry a J Frame with 5 and hope for the best?

All my carry revolvers are cut for moon clips and I carry two extra clips, so I guess they would be closer to speed loaders than strips.
The reason being there is no faster way to reload a revolver, it would be impossible for a case to slip under the extractor and tie the gun up and the extraction is positive for a short barrel with a short ejector rod.

I carry one strip as a reload. I don't envision a scenario where a speed reload would matter, I just don't want an empty gun while waiting for the authorities.

I usually carry a J frame as a BUG or 2 J frames. I also usually carry a strip in a flat belt pouch similar to a 2x2x2.

When I carry the Baby Chief, I pocket a strip of six. Enough for where I care to travel. Also allows for a tactical reload.

The likelihood of a reload
is nil.
And if you have time to
do a reload a speed strtip
will do.
If you're really geared to
expecting extended fights,
then carry a hi-cap auto. Or
as suggested carry two
J-frames.

It seems obvious that carry options change over the years and situational conditions change over the years. I worked as a deputy for a few years and carried everything that I needed on my belt and ankle. I was prepared for a small war. Now retired at age 83,
things are very different. I cannot move like I used to, I cannot see like I used to, I cannot react like I used to. For me comfort comes from having an Airweight 637 in
my jeans pocket with my cellphone and my keys,2 five round speed loaders, and a small knife in the other pocket. The Safari Comp.1 loader is low cost-works good- and
gives a positive reload without any lost motion or lost rounds. I have a very reliable firearm, a method of communicating for help, 10 extra rounds of plus P ammo, and a
very sharp one handed knife for the "when everything else fails" moment. I have sacrificed nothing in comfort of dress and except for the knife clip showing on the left
jeans pocket NO one knows that I am armed.

I carry a 649 without a reload when I'm around the house essentially or going to the store. Anywhere else and I'm carrying a 1911 with more rounds. Like others have said I don't anticipate getting the opportunity to reload in most situations. If I run out of rounds I either need to be running away to safety or a rifle or I'm already dead.

If I am carrying a revolver concealed, I like speed strips as they are less bulky and thinner than speed loaders. In the woods, I wear a double speed loader pouch on my belt, as concealability is not an issue.

Before discounting a reload.
Lost a family member this way.
5 rounds fired.
Stopped the threat.
Empty pistol while dialing 911.
The attackers friend shows and kills them.
If you have expended rounds and have time to top off, it can save your life!
BTW moon clips for me.

I keep a speed strip in my pocket, and 1 in all my vest/jacket chest pockets. No matter what garment I grab, there's at least 6 extra rounds. Lately I've been throwing a speed loader in my vest pocket. Don't expect to need them but usually have 17 spare rounds for my J, just in case

I have six rounds of 44 mag in the revolver, two six round speed loaders. When I carry it 24/7. When I carry other revolvers it’s always two speed loaders. I just wish I was as fast as Jerry when loading them.
Note, decades ago when that night fisherman was killed with his own knife near Boston. I carried the 1911 with 9/45 acp with 7 mags plus two boxes of 50rds in the car. When I fished at night in the wilds alone, I was thinking a copycat might try his luck. It’s the old boyscout in me be prepared. The news gives people ideas.

I usually carry 4 six round speedstrips for my 360 all the time. I carried a Dan Wesson 15-2 for years and felt no need to go out and buy 5 round speedstrips for the J frame.

When I carry a revolver its usually my 642. I carry one speed strip as they're much less bulky than a speed loader.

When I CCW a J frame I carry a speedstrip. With my K frame one speedloader and one speedstrip but that's my outdoors gun, the speedstrip carries shot loads while the speedloader has LSWC HP rounds.

I have used Safariland speedloaders since the 1970's, when I carried a revolver on duty. It's a very good design, and retains the ammo even when the loader is dropped in most cases. Always a good idea to have additional ammunition on hand and easily accessible.
Speedloader selection is based on personal preference for a particular design. Whatever you choose, be sure to practice with them regularly using snap caps. Take your speedloaders to the range for practice too, and be sure to confirm they work correctly, and fit your selected revolver properly. Don't "assume" your loaders fit your particular revolver, just because the loader is made to fit your model gun. Grip/stock designs can change dramatically among models, and this can affect the fit of the loader you have chosen.
Remember, loading under stress is very difficult. The more you practice, the better.

I started in 1971 when almost everyone carried a revolver as a duty weapon and some sort of a snub for back up and off duty. I am also a lefty who had to figure out how to manipulate a revolver with respect to reloading etc. I have carried speed loaders from Safariland and others over the years and now often carry a speed strip for my M&P 340 when just around the place or going to town. When carrying a larger K or N frame while out and about, I often carry at least one speed loader in a belt pouch for whatever I am carrying or I go to one of my many semi auto loaders instead and always carry at least one spare mag. The mag should be considered not as much as the reload for a protracted gun fight as it is for a malfunction or magazine failure. Same with a speed loader. I always carry something to reload the weapon I am carrying just because!

I like the strips because they carry easier and they are easier for me to handle. The speed loader may be faster for some but, I fumble with them sometimes and have dropped rounds.

Yes, that. Usually. However, I have a standard, loaded speedloader staring me in the face every day so I imagine I'll start keeping that with me. I did have a wonderful strip but it's long gone. I think I might get another. Times being what they are it's probably time to have the extra ammunition. Or a BUG.

A 632 with Buffalo Bores in a Lobo holster and six extras in a strip in a leather carrier, both on the belt. An HKS speed loader would make for a faster reload, but I haven't found a belt carrier for a speed loader that's nearly as inconspicuous under my concealment sweaters as the little strip carrier. And frankly, if I really need more than the first 6 I'm probably in way over my head anyway.

Speed strips. But I will admit to not really practicing with them. I'm going to change that.
Woods carry is usually neither, but a leather belt fitted cartridge holder, you know the kind, with loop, like John Wayne had on his six gun belt. But it only holds 10 I think.

When I carry extra rounds, I do it via Speed Strips.
Since my 642-1 is relegated to around home and walking distance, I often don't carry additional ammo.
Away from home, (town or further), I carry a different firearm.

The Baby Chiefs Spl that has become my default CCW has 5 rounds of stand velocity lead SWCs in the cylinder. Sometimes I remember to throw a speed loader or strips into my kit, usually not. I generally try to avoid high danger areas though.

With my GP100 there’s always a speedloader in my pocket, or a moonclip with my 325 or 625, always. Most importantly I spend time weekly on practicing reloads so that it feels second nature. You may think that you have the act of reloading down pat, but under extreme stress, perhaps rounds coming your way, both gross and fine motor skills are affected, as anyone here who has faced that can attest.
Train.....
....and then train some more.
And never say nil.

It takes me 7 seconds to reload my 642 with a speed loader.
Time better spent trying to run away.

I carry my 586 every day in a remora sticky holster with a speed strip in the watch pocket of my jeans. If I'm working then I have another speed strip and 2 speed loaders in my work pack.

A lot of folks carrying speed strips here. That said, who makes the best ones? I have heard if a couple of brands that tend to crack pretty fast and start falling apart, others that are too stiff or too bulky. I have no experience with them , though I have used speed loaders for years but hate trying to carry them around.

I've been using Tuff Products Quick Strips for several years. They take a bit of breaking in, but after that they work pretty well. They've developed cracks after a few years of regular use, but I consider them consumables and just replace them as needed.
The best speedloader carry method that worked for me was JOX pouches. They're kydex pouches that ride above the belt, so bulk is minimized. They're very secure, but release the loaders easily when grabbed. They're not cheap, but worth the cost, IMO, if you want a concealable, secure, and accessible method for carrying speedloaders. YMMV.

I carry my SW 38special airweight with one speed loader. walking the dog around the neighborhood or doing quick errands in my small rural town. I am also a lefty so the odds of my quickly reloading aren't that good. That being said, carrying 5 extra rounds in my pocket beats not having them if i have time to use them.
anything beyond that , it's my 40 caliber Glock 23 with a single magazine of 13 rounds

Comp II speedloaders when the weather is cool enough for jackets/sweatshirts. Speed strips during summer in shorts and a t-shirt.

Frankie2blue: Have used Bianchi speed strips for years. When carrying a small revolver 2 speed strips. There are no speed loaders for any of the j frame or other small frame guns that I’ve owned without changing grips or making other modifications. Also, speed strips fit flat in pocket where speed loaders have a tendency to be bulky and print.
As to your second question, one should always carry extra ammo, JMO (no matter the carry method. Speed strip, speed loader or lose etc.). One should NEVER have a situation where you end up with an empty gun!
As ProCarryNAustin shared in his post, it could get you killed! JMO

Dump pouch/Galco 2x2x2 on the belt.
Otherwise speed strip, I've never warmed up to speed loaders.

I don't carry speed loaders out of the house because of their cylindrical bulk. When I go to the range, I take 5 speed strips. I only load from speed strips to maintain proficiency with them.

I'm pretty sure I have never seen a 586 with a 3" barrel. Nice.

A couple of strips here. The cylinder of the revolver is hard enough to conceal. I figure I don't need to try to somehow conceal a couple of more cylinders.

Moon clips when applicable. Speed strips for my non-moon clip guns.
