Default Smith 625 .45 LC & .45 acp

Hey just a question, is it possible to shoot a .45acp in a 625 that is chambered for .45 LC using moon clips or auto rims? Thanks!

I think there would be rear clearance issues. 45 Rev has a very small, not real thick rim and that is what the gun is set up for. Just a semi-educated guess.

No, not unless it’s been cut for moon clips. As mentioned by Robert Walsh, there’s not enough clearance between the back of the cylinder and recoil shield.

I have a 25-9 in 45 Colt and a 625-8 in 45 acp.
I have the Dillon 550 set up for 45 acp. I ordered 45 Auto Rim brass and a new shellplate for the Dillon so I can shoot the Auto Rim in both guns. The dies are the same. I have to use 45 Colt locator pins, which I have.
Dillon and Starline had the products in stock and provided tracking numbers within 24 hours.

So you haven't done it yet?
I fear you will be disappointed, I doubt a .090" AR rim will fit a .060" LC rear gauge.

I will be shocked if the 45AR will even close in your 45lc revolver. It doesn’t work for others because the rim is too thick. That’s why you can’t trim 45lc brass and use it in place of 45AR brass.

I just tried a 45 AR in my Model 460 and the rim is too thick. The cylinder will not close.

You can have the cylinder of your .45 Colt machined for moon clips. The two best known gunsmiths for this are T. K. Custom and Pinnacle High Performance. You only need to send them the cylinder, so no shipping hassles. Cost runs around $150 and when done, you'll be able to shoot .45ACP in moon clips or .45 Colt in moon clips, speed loaders or loaded singly.

Here is my 25-13 Mountain Gun that T. K. modified...

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I have shot it before. One of my club members was kind enough to load up a box for me to try out

To sum it up:

A S&W revolver chambered in .45 ACP/.45 AutoRim should not chamber a .45 (Long) Colt cartridge. The chambers aren't deep enough.

A S&W revolver chambered in .45 (Long) Colt should not chamber .45 ACP in clips or .45 AutoRim cartridges. The rims are too thick.

You have been able to shoot unaltered 45 Auto Rim cartridges in an unaltered S&W Model 25-9? Or maybe they were the newer 45 Cowboy Special cartridge?

You are correct. The 45 AR won’t allow the 25-9 cylinder to close.
I misinterpreted the description at Starline:

Now I wonder if the gentleman provided me with the Cowboy special cartridge. It has been a few years so I can’t trust my memory.

While you are correct about .45 AR under any circumstances, it will chamber .45 ACP in moon clips if the cylinder has been machined to accept clips.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I knew of this option but was not really wanting to carve up the cylinder, but what the heck, it's a shooter.
Now it seems like the best option so I can simply load 45 ACP for both revolvers and the 1911.

Now to check Dillon and Starline return policies.
Thank you!

Even with a cylinder so machined you cannot fir 45 auto rims. The full moon clip fit in the recessed area of such a cylinder and the 45 colt rims seat on the piece left around the outside edge and give correct headspace. A 45 auto rim case would also ride on the same ledge and as they are about .035 thicker so the cylinder would not close.

You can also use the rimless 45 Winchester magnum brass in a cylinder such modified. But it would not be advisable to fire full power 45 Winchester magnums in it although some do.

I reread this post. You want to be able to use the same cartridge in both revolvers. It can be done with the 45 Cowboy Special I mentioned earlier. You need the 45 CS brass, a shellplate for the 45 long Colt, and dies for the 45 ACP. It is not nearly as complicated as it sounds.

I was talking about factory stock revolvers. I have a M25-5 that I intend to have modified to take .45 ACP in full moon clips.

I thought 45CS was essentially a 45acp length case with a 45 Colt size rim. In which case the firing pin will not reach the primer on the 45acp gun. Really, to fire the same cartridge in both guns he will need to machine the 45 Colt cylinder for moon clips and shoot 45acp with moon clips in both.

The very few 45 CS I have tried it my ACP revolvers worked BUT they were taper crimped like the ACP cartridge and headspaced off the case mouth.
