Angry Wait for S&W or buy Taurus 327FedMag?

Sorry guys, I just have to vent. I've had a lot of success buying some great classic S&W revolvers on GB, but lately my target has been the Model 632 from only 10 - 12 years ago. It was Smith's only attempt (so far) at a 327 Federal Mag 6 shooter. It was done on the J frame so it had the advantage of the extra shot over the normal 38 5-shot cylinders. I've shot the Ruger 101 in 327 and got hooked on the cartridge but not on the revolver. I know S&W would have a much better trigger. So I really want the Model 632 as a shooter and occasional CCW, but the prices are crazy on GB. I was just bidding on one that was new old stock that I was willing to go beyond what I've seen them at so far, and I thought I had a good chance. Holy **** - the thing went into the ozone. (I hope I'm not bidding against fellow forum members and driving up the price - there's got to be a way to avoid that. ) I've just about lost hope after that experience. Opinion please - should I wait for S&W to give it another shot or should I just go for a Ruger LCR or Taurus? Does anyone have any connections at the factory to let us know if they are considering anything? I know I seen threads describing projects for custom builds but I'm not willing to go there. Others seem to think that the K frame is a better platform for the 327, but I'd like to stay small and on the light side.
Oh well. That's all. Any ideas or opinions anyone?

I would try the Taurus. I’ve had good luck with their Revolvers. From what I read these days it’s a toss up on what brand to buy. I wouldn’t buy the Smith just because of the lock, but that doesn’t bother everybody.

Not the .327 version, but I bought a Taurus in .32 H&R Magnum for my Granddaughter. She loves it and so do I.

Wait on Smith & Wesson!? I’ve been waiting on them to make anything in 32 since I narrowly missed getting a model 632-2 in 2012. I asked my favorite stocking dealer to get me one but the supply line was already empty. I’ve been out bid twice, even putting in what I thought was a crazy I’m going to win this one high bid.

The model 632-1 that I think you were looking at, just sold today for $2K when shipping and transfer fees are added. The 632-2 I want is over $1,500 with 8 days left. Wouldn’t be surprised if it goes over $2K as well. I want one but not that much!

Why Smith & Wesson can’t see the market for another run of 327 magnum revolvers is hard to understand.

Yup. Sounds like you were looking at the same ones as me. I was up over 1700 before I gave up on the -1. Absolutely crazy money. You'd think that would convince S&W that there was a market. The -2 is a hammer-less, and some are convinced that you need that for carry but I'll take the DASA. Maybe the Taurus is the way to go.

Frankly, I would buy a Ruger version well before I considered the Taurus, based on past experience with Taurus. Nice thing about Ruger is they stand behind their guns if you have an issue. Can't say the same for Taurus.

Thing with the .327 mag , I think, is its a lot like the .41 mag. - a small, but serious fan base. But, with gun demand what it is, S&W can sell all the .22 and .38 spl. J frames it can make, so why change that up by introducing a .327 that they know will not be a big seller? My opinion, anyway.

Larry

I wouldn't wait for S&W. No telling if or when they will make another run of 632s.

I don't own a LCR but have shot them. The DA trigger pull is really nice. The light weight would be a disadvantage shooting 327s at the range but not a problem with 32 H&R or 32 S&W ammo. And would be nice for carry.

My recommendation would be to buy a LCR now and hope for S&W at some point. They are both small, I bet you could find room for both in your safe.

I second the recommendation on the Ruger LCR. The Ruger is certainly not as pretty as the Smith but the LCR is a good revolver and Ruger does stand behind their product if you do have a problem.

Right now they’re selling everything they can make as fast as they can get it out the door.

As far as they’re concerned, they’re already feeding the market.

I will not own a Taurus revolver again. I owned one of their Beretta 92 clones years ago in 9mm and had no problem with it. I owned a Taurus .22 revolver that I purchased brand new and it suffered from many problems (out of time, spit lead, misfires). Sent it back to the factory under warranty and it was returned with nothing repaired!! Just a note warning me to not use reloads (was a .22; don't reload many of those!!!) Customer service from them is ****!! Phone calls went unreturned and I finally gave up. Sold it to a friend with full disclosure and lost my butt on the deal. I would definitely purchase a Ruger over a Taurus any day.

Is Taurus making them again? Unless they are, they’re probably as rare as the S&W .327 offerings.

Have heard that line on about every gun ever manufactured. There will always be some good and some bad. Those are called "Lemons" and usually it applies to cars, but it can be applied to anything that is manufactured.

Ruger triggers are usually horrible, but they can be fixed.

I have a Ruger SP101, and Single Seven, a Taurus M327 and a Henry, in .327 mag. I bought the Taurus for my wife. After she got used to the .32S&W and .32S&WL, I had her shoot nothing but .32H&R mag and .327FM self defense loads. After about three years, the revolver is unreliable. Many light strikes. Tore it down to bare bones, cleaned everything. Changed out the springs with Wolf springs of different weights, and it did not help. Never tried contacting Taurus about it, to see what might be repairable or not. I really like the Single 7, my personal favorite of what I have. I am interested in getting an LCR but not at the prices they are going for on auction sites. If an LGS gets one in stock, I might tick off my sweetie and just buy it.

My opinion, get the LCR now, or spend spend spend on the S&W. Wish I had got the S&W when they were being made, can't/won't pay that much for them now.

I wanted a compact .327 FM and bought a 3” SP101. The one with the windage adjustable rear sight. A bit heavy but I knew that going in.

S&W is probably selling every revolver they can make. Why get tooling for another product? Don't think that I would wait on them.

I carry a 632 with Buffalo Bore 32H&R loads every day, but wanted to try the hotter 327 Fed. Figured S&W would not make one in my lifetime, so bought an LCR. And discovered a couple of things.

First, the Am Eagle and Speer Gold Dot 100g loads are absolute monsters to shoot in the LCR, even with its steel frame. Recoil is near what I remember the single 357 Magnum round felt like in a S&W 649. (Part of that may be due to the much higher bore axis of the LCR with its stock rubber grips as compared to a J frame.) And they're incredibly loud. They're fun in the bigger and heavier, all steel Single Seven, but immensely unpleasant - to me - in the LCR.

All other 327 factory load I tried were barely more potent than the 32H&R from Buffalo Bore, so no benefit there and the detriment of a slightly longer case and a still pretty short ejector rod.

Second, my old eyes really like the red dot of a Crimson Trace grip, but the CT model for an LCR is just enough different from the one for a J frame to make it extraordinarily painful - for me - to shoot. The lump for the laser light is placed where recoil smashes it directly into the upper part of the knuckle between my hand and trigger finger, even with the lesser 327 Fed rounds or hot 32 H&Rs. In contrast, the (several) CT grips I have for J frames have the light lump slightly lower, and recoil pushes it more on the lower side of the knuckle where there is either more fat/muscle/tendon padding or fewer nerves or both.

Whatever the reason, over several range sessions I could never get more than a dozen rounds off with the LCR/CT combination before it hurt too much to continue, and I would change the grips back to standard ones. But I can shoot a J frame/CT setup pretty much all day with anything but the Buffalo Bores - those are just above +P 38 Specials in energy, and I can only stand a couple of cylinders of those in an alloy J frame before having to take a break.

I haven't gotten around to getting rid of the LCR 327 yet, but I'll never shoot it again.

Just the experience of one guy - who really likes and carries 32s.

Any new offering from S&W that isn’t a “classic” remake of a discontinued model is a long shot. I think we were lucky to get the 69 and I don’t see anything new in the future

I'm quite biased AGAINST TAURUS because I had a PT-145 that I dearly loved but had three catastrophic failures over 10 yrs. Each time, Taurus made me pay for shipping and repairs. I couldn't contend with three (each one different) failures AND repairs so I went to Springfield Armory and try to bash Taurus every chance that I get.

I’m a ruger Guy first they are Mack truck strong. I’d go with a ruger in 327. I did purchased the misses a used Taurus m94/22lr revolver, great starter gun for her. But my choices mainly are ruger, s&w and colts first. But for 22 cal revolvers I like the old h&r’s too.

My opinion is that you should never buy a Taurus, especially when you have the possibility to buy a Ruger. I talked to another S&W distributor in Europe last year when I attended the armorer class. They had been a Taurus distributor for 20 years and he told me that the quality at Taurus have becoming worse over the years.

The devil will probably form an Ice Hockey team and have home games before the powers that be at Smith and Wesson decide that the 327 is worth making. There are still a few gunsmiths out there who will build one for you, like the "Project 616" I had built on a Model 66. I have a couple of 327s and I'm not sure I would go to the trouble and expense to build one on a J frame. I think the K frame is a much better platform for what is, after all, a true magnum.

I have a Taurus 327 Fed Mag Snub. Factory bobbed hammer. Fantastic little gun. Smooth action. Shoots great. I throw it in my pocket when I’m just running a quick errand. I’m a S&W collector but in the last year I’ve picked up 7-8 Taurus revolvers and autos and been real satisfied. Got a revolver in 40 S&W, 45 acp, 45 LC and 9mm to go with the 327 fed mag. All are fun shooters

I was able to improve the trigger of the .327 SP101 with some careful polishing and a couple of shims.

I definitely wouldn't hold my breath on S&W making another 327.

I love my LCR327 so much I will likely get it in other calibers as well. It has a "love it or hate it" trigger that is very light and long. They start off a tiny bit clunky but smooth out beautifully after several hundred dry fires and a bit of lube.

That said, I think I'd love a SP101 in 327. Just like my WC GP100, I'd throw a trigger job and lighter springs in it and I bet it would be great. I absolutely love the GP100/SP101 design where the rubber grip slides over the undersized frame. The ergos are as good as any revolver I have held, and you don't have an exposed steel backstrap digging into your hand while shooting magnums.

I do agree that true 327 Magnums are HOT and LOUD. They are absolute screamers. I really need to save up and get a lever gun in 327. I bet that is a hoot.

If a Smith & Wesson is what you really want, then you ought to wait until you can get one. Purchasing a substitute that you ultimately won't be satisfied with is a waste of money, and the fact that you have to ask if you should buy a Taurus or Ruger instead, not to mention that you've avoided doing so thus far in spite of all your trouble finding a Smith & Wesson tells me that you're better off waiting.

Bide your time, wait it out, and eventually you'll find what you're looking for at a price you're happy to pay.

I won't hold my breath for S&W to make another .32 cal revolver, they don't have a good sales track record with them to be motivated to give it another try.

Consider all the ones they came out with, like the 16-4, 43x, 63x .32 H&R Magnum revolvers, all were discontinued after a few years production.

I went with a Ruger SP101. A Wolff spring kit and a bit of polishing gave it great feeling action.

But I also am lucky enough to have two 6" bbl 16-4's, and one of those has had the cylinder reamed to .327 Federal Magnum.

If S&W could be convinced to give the .32 another try, they should look at bringing back a K-Frame in .327 Federal.

I would get the Ruger or Taurus now.
My personal experience with all three brands indicates Smith has the worst quality control of the three.
Smith has chosen to make the customer a big part of the final inspection process that used to be done in-house.
Especially where getting barrel-cylinder gap right and correctly clocking the barrels are concerned.
I know it’s a limited sample, but my Taurus Model 85 UL in .38 Special is a much better gun in every way than any Smith J frame I have or ever have owned.

I’m a big fan of the 327 Federal, while very loud, if I’ve read the ballistics correctly, about 80-90% power of the 357, with about half the recoil. Having said that, ammo is expensive, and not always easy to find. Just not practical to be able to put in the dedicated range time for it to be my EDC, so I’ll stick with my 357 or 9mm. The G43 is a nice option when wearing light clothing.

I own a Taurus 327 revolver, and it’s been a great gun, bought it back 10-11 years ago, but I’ve only put maybe 200-250 rounds through it, no issues to date. I worry because I’ve heard the horror stories of their long term reliability. One of those stupid predicaments where I don’t want to part with it, but don’t shoot it with any regularity either.

Much as I’d love to have one, I’m not paying the required $1500+ for a Smith, if I were going to buy another it would be a Ruger. Rock solid guns, and they back them.

I guess I shouldn't be in this 'back and forth' as I have already made up my mind...

I have several S&W's in 32 and I and my wife like them . I stepped up and got her the Ruger in 327 Fed . The recoil , while not wild , can definitely be felt . I don't know if I'd want to shoot one in a J frame , and I like the cartridge . If I remember right , the M16 was made in 32 magnum and if that could be modified to shoot 327 fed , that would be the one to own .

First, I will never own another Taurus product again. Never!. Have you thought about the Ruger SP101? It’s real nice. Here’s my 632-1. I bought it years ago, new. The prices are so high, I keep it put up. Good luck!

The chambers of the 432PD and 431PD could be increased to accept the 327, but with the light weight (13 oz) I don't think the recoil would be tolerable. I will just stick with the 32 H&R.

Yes, the SP101 in 3" was tempting me. The shorter barrel keeps it from being too heavy, but I don't think they make that length anymore, do they?

Question for GUNHACKER. Do you have a feel for how the availability is for the 16-4 in 3", and how well does it perform with the 327 in the one you have reamed out? Interesting option if it's not too much of a job for a good GS.

I have not read all the responses, so if I am repeating forgive me.

Two thoughts, I have one Taurus revolver a M-617 .357 Magnum it has been a decent gun. Nothing fancy about but it has always worked.

Second, I've found that when I "settle" on the second option I've never been totally pleased and generally end up spending more money to buy what I wanted in the first place.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I have a couple of 32 H&R's. a 7 shot CA Professional and a Ruger single six mag. From what I see the CA will not take the pressures the Ruger will. CA says they will never again make a 327 Fed. The Target Patriot 4" CA I had was ok but reports are they did not hold up. I don't need the top end of the 327 but would like a little heavier 32 Mag.
If I wanted a 631 and I do, I would set aside $150 -$200 a month in a fund and keep going until I had one.

Keep looking for a Smith &Wesson but get Ruger LCR(x) now. Avoid any Taurus product at all costs.

Skip the SP101 too. I've had five and only kept one. Their triggers suck. The LCR(x) have fantastic stock triggers and though ugly are great guns for carry.

Also at the price of a S&W 327 would you be willing to carry it

Wollf springs in my Sp101 3" .357 turned a so-so trigger into a very shootable one. Sold a 3" LCRx, didn't like the reset on the trigger, too easy to short stroke...which just illustrates, different strokes for different folks.
As to Taurus being 'garbage'...a false canard when applied to today's production line.

The 16-4 was not made with a 3" baarel, they were made in 4", 6" and 8-3/8" barrels.

Finding a 16-4 is a tall order these days, and when one comes up for sale it's price tag is North of $1000.

They are a few people on this forum that had one made up, this is one of the recent ones:

Project 616

Changing a .32 H&R Magnum cylinder to .327 Federal only takes a .327 Federal chamber reamer to extend the length of the existing chamber to fit the longer .327 Federal case.

How do I like my re-chambered 16-4?

I like it! The full length under lug barrel really helps to soak up the recoil, the Federal 100 gr. factory ammo is pretty lively stuff.

The Ruger SP101 I have is a handful with that Federal ammo.

You may ask, why did I buy the Ruger when I already have the converted 16-4?

Because it's stainless, and lighter than the 4" 686 that I've been using as a "camping/hiking" gun.

Been on the “327FedUp” wait train for years.
Missed out on a 632CCPro about 6 years ago deciding if I wanted to add another caliber to the stable and waiting for the $1100 price tag to come down. Kicking myself for not doing it.
$2000 for a Python back then. Where am I going with this post anyway?

$1,000 for a decent model 16-4 would be a real bargain in today’s market.

Just for fun, I weighed my 6” Model 16-4 and got an empty weight of 44.2 ounces. The SP-101 4.2” only weighed 29.6 ounces or 14.6 ounces less.

That's probably not a great idea.

Sort of like reaming out a 642 to accept 357 Mag.

It would probably work, but 327 and 357 mag would be way over pressure for an Aluminum gun.

S&W made the Scandium alloy guns for a reason -- to strengthen the frame for magnum rounds.

You would stand a good chance of cracking the frame.

Now I'd like to see a Scandium version of the 340PD in 327 Federal. But it would kick like a mule.

I own Rugers, Smiths, and Taurus revolvers. I never had an issue with Taurus revolvers, and I wouldn't think twice buying another before paying the exorbitant prices that some of the Smiths are going for.

Taurus hate is based on stuff they made almost a decade ago now.
