586-4 Lew Horton 3 inch
I know a collector who has this 586-4 Lew Horton
with a 3 inch barrel. I have seen them in a 2 1/2 inch
barrel but rarely the 3 inch. It is unfired in the labeled
box. I am trying to work out a value on it to buy it.
He says the 3 inch is very rare. Does anybody know about
these?

No, I don’t, I guess. I always thought the 2-1/2” barrel was much less common.

586-4 Lew Horton 3 inch
I saw one listed here on the forum a while back, and I've seen a couple listed and sold on Gunbroker over the years. They were all north of 2K.

I think there were 2 runs of factory produced 586 2.5"ers. 210 and 285 units made in 1993-1994.
And two runs of the 3" 586. 200 units for the RSR group and another run after in 1994-1995. Presumably also about 200.
So, definitely less than 500 on the 2.5" and maybe 400 on the 3".

Here is portion of archives letter on the 586-4 Brazil 38". Letter shows info on the 3" you are asking about. I'd estimate value of your 586-4 3" in the $2500+ range. Add $'s for unfired with box that generally brings a premium. Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps.

Have seen a handful of 2 1/2" M586's over the years, both 357 and 38 Special export versions. Only able to see/collect one in 3", a few pictures have shown up on the forum over the years.
I'd say the 3" is much more rare/scarce than the shorter version.
Here's the 3" I have in my collection and a 2 1/2" that I rented for a couple years.
Mine isn't for sale, but if it was it would be well into the ~$3k range, it's too special.

Wow! Thanks for all this. I know I have to pay a
premium but it is a gorgeous revolver.

In the past three years I’ve seen two sell for just north of $3k. That’s a lot of money for a 586, I don’t care the barrel length.

I would love to get one, but that price tag is way too high.

That 3" is dead sexy but not a $3,000 gun for me. Not even a $1,500 one.

@SmithNut
Oh what beautiful examples of 2.5" and 3" heaters. They both would go well over $2,500 on GB... And just how does one "Rent" a lovely 2.5" version of a 586-4? Being an officer I presume? Either way, thanks for sharing these beautiful works of art!
I'm a 3" barreled N frame and Lew Horton "nut" myself... I got this beauty 2 years or so ago for $1,000 out the door from a New Hampshire "pawn-shop"... The owner of said "establishment" didn't bother to wipe her down or clean it so it looked to be in a bit of distressed of a state. I snatched her up, cleaned her up with a bit of Mobil-1 synthetic and she was actually in 90% or better condition. Then I called Lew Horton Distributors & verified she came thru their doors as well.
Deals are out there and you have to jump on them when they present themselves. This baby would go just north of 2,000 on GB at current as well. But being how hard they are to find and that she's my favorite Revolver I'm looking to keep the M24-3 forever.

I agree, it's just not there because of Lew Horton.
