Default Red Dot Mount 686+ Advice

Hello all,
Looking for a low profile red dot mount for my wife's 686+. In my search I found what I was looking for manufactured by member revolver_ph. I sent him a message but received no response. Sadly the last post on his website stated he might have to evacuate do to the California fires (hope he's ok). Does anyone know if he still sells these or can you recommend something similar? I'm thinking Vortex Viper or Burris Fastfire III if that matters.

The Allchin mounts are a solid choice.

I think a member had actually measured which mount was lower. You said you wanted the lowest? It was a Raptor mount. The Allchin was taller a smudge, but I can tell you, after shooting both, having guns with both, what's the difference. They're both about the same.
What I dont like about the Allchin mount are those little plastic locator pins inside? You really gotta bolt that optic down good. So it wont move.

I have both. I use both.

Here my 686+PC 5", sporting a Raptor mount, vortex venom.

Do you have any info on how I might purchase a Raptor?
Thanks!

Another vote for the Raptor Engineering mount. I have a few of these and they work great.

HotRodJoe,
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

We are still recovering from a horrible fire in our Santa Cruz CA mountains.
We had to evacuate for a couple of weeks. Our house and shop were spared
unlike several of our friends homes.

However, we are not yet back up and running the mount production. Our
machinist is still dealing with post-fire issues. At this point it is
unclear if we will resume operation.

If we get going again we will get back to you.

Regards,
Phillip

Thanks for the update Phillip, I too have a couple of your excellent mounts and look forward to the day you can resume production. In any event, I am happy to hear the fire spared you and hope that you and your people can make a full recovery. Good luck!

I have used both on a 986 and a 617-6 and the difference is so minimal in actual use you can hardly tell unless you use a caliper.

I don't recall which one is on which gun.

The 617 (top photo) has the Allchin and the 986 has the Raptor. It's easy to tell the difference since the Raptor fits the red dot perfectly and the Allchin mount is about an eighth of an inch bigger than the base of the red dot and therefore the mount extends beyond the end of the sight. This is easily seen in the photo of the 617.

Tagging as well. I could use another one. Sorry to hear about your trouble, Phillip. Unbelievable what’s happened out there. I wish you all the best and hope you get up and running soon.

Raptor Engineering has worked well for me on a 617, a 629, a 69, and a 686+.

The Allchin mount for an RMR or Holosun fits perfectly. I would recommend one. The Allchin mount for a Vortex Venom, not so much. It fits the pistol well using all three mounting holes on an S&W but doesn’t fit the red dot well and it works loose.

The EGW mount for the Venom only uses ONE of the S&W tapped mounting screws and it worked loose on mine. It fit the red dot great, just not the pistol. They need to add another mounting hole for ow it attaches to the revolver, in my view.

I wish there were other options out there.

I also have a Raptor mount on my 625-2. Like the low profile and the fit to the S&W frame. I ordered mine using [email protected].

Old chief.......That is a sweet looking set-up on your 625. What kind of hole pattern was required to mount that Raptor base to the top strap of your revolver. I have a Holosun 407 gr v2 mounted on a Cz shadow 2 and I really like the green dot. I was looking to get another, but Holosun has pulled them due to the button placement lawsuit settlement with Trijicon. Hopefully Raptor will get up and running again. California seems to be cursed as of late with natural disasters and even worse leadership.

Default Update

After a few setbacks, my Wife's 686+ is finally ready for the range. A friend turned me on to a screaming deal from an online retailer for the Swampfox red dot. The Allchin mount is a nice piece and it sits low. As someone else mentioned, the locating pins are to small for the hole in the optic and strangely enough too large for the holes in the mount. I'm hoping the hold down screws are adequate as the optic isn't riding a slide. I'll update again after we get to the range.

I picked up a Raptor to mount a Trigicon RMR2 on my 629 prior to the fires. I wanted to pick up another Raptor to mount another Trijicon RMR2 on a 686, but by then the fires had left destruction and Raptor wasn't up and running yet.

I will continue waiting for a bit to see if Raptor can resume, if not an Allchin will be used.

I can highly recommend the Weigand mini scope mount. I have it on my 617, but it would easily hold up to .357 rounds. You can find it here.
