4" 657?
So I found my "holy grail" gun to today a 4" 41 magnum, I've been looking for a couple of years and found it at a gun show today. Now for the interesting part it is a stainless gun, but is stamped mod 57 instead of 657. Has anyone seen a mis mark like this? Fairly happy with the price I gave in today's world. He had it priced at 1100 we settled on 1k.

Looks like a 57 refinished in hard chrome to me. That serial number would be 1979/1980 and the 657 didn't come out until 1986. A great finish that will stand up well but not sure a refinished 57 is worth quite $1k. Here's my 25-5 in hard chrome.

That appears to be a nickel plated Model 57. The N serial number puts the production date at around 1980. It also has a pinned barrel which the 657 didn't have. The 4" Model 657 was made from 1986-1988.

Agree, it has a pinned barrel (unlike the 657) and satin chromed hammer and trigger (like the 657; these may be refinished original parts or swapped in from a stainless N frame). Cool gun.

It's not stainless. It is either NP3 (or similar) or hard chrome, those aftermarket platings look similar to my eyes. The trigger is not standard, S&W did not put trigger stop screws in their triggers. Overall, it's a nice looking 41 Magnum and is likely a good shooter, but it is far from being a factory original piece with an incorrect marking.

All in all it is still a very nice gun just not a collector's piece. In the DFW area, where I live, the $1000 price would be at the upper end of it's value but you certainly did not get hosed.

Did the seller try to pass it off as a stainless gun? If so, I'd make some sort of complaint, since you did pay an upper-range price for it. (but less than I paid for mine) Did you get a box or accessories with it?
Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful. I don't care for shiny nickel finishes much, but that matte stainless-looking finish is nice, and I'd be proud to have that P&R gun as a partner to my blued 1968
S-prefix M57.

Like others have already said, that is a hard chromed Model 57. But, I would still own, shoot and enjoy.
Congratulations on your "new" 57.

Nice piece!
I like the look and durability of hard chrome and NP3. I actually prefer it over stainless, blue or nickel for a working gun and would happily pay for it.
