Maybe it’s a guy whose wife told him he has to sell the gun. “It’s been up for sale for three weeks. I told you no one wants this old junk, sweetheart. I’ll guess I’ll have to keep it”

I watched that one too... I have no idea why it went for that. I thought maybe some shill bidding was happening?

I have tabulated an increase of the Magnum Smiths of not less than 15% per year in the last few years, but that is clearly ridiculous

You have to admit it is very well photographed and thoroughly described. Too much money but very well presented and super clean. Some pictures up there are dirty guns which are poorly photographed.

Two individuals who apparently really wanted this 629-1 and were willing to spend the money for it. What every seller hopes for.

I could understand that much easier than the recent sale of a Mod 15-2 in 95% condition for $2800. Remember it takes two or more to keep the bidding going.
Over this past weekend a local auction had 9mm ammo going for up $62 for a 50 round box. and one case of a 100 round box of CCI .22's which went for $65.

This was my initial thought but if you look at the buyer, he/she has a lot of recent purchases with positive feedback. I think some people are reading the political tea leaves and speculating on assets that could become more in-demand in the future.
I also agree the pictures sure can make a huge difference. It always amazes me how people try to sell a gun with no pictures or some terrible pictures in poor lighting. A little work goes a long way.

I passed on one a few years ago down at a Ruidoso Gunshow.
Have regretted not buying that Gun.
And it wasn’t quite as expensive as this one!

As far as I know, a 629-1 didn’t come in a presentation case and wasn’t supplied with Combat stocks. Those seem like obvious add-on’s to me are probably worth $500-$600 alone. That still wouldn’t make the entire package worth over $1700 IMO.
Perhaps several uninformed bidders though they were after something special that left the factory like that.

The presentation case was an extra cost option from sometime in 1982 until 1985 when it was deleted from S&W's catalog. However, without looking at the original invoice, there is no way to know if this 629-1 was ordered with a case or not. I would guess not, but who knows.

Wow that’s nuts. I would say categorically there are uniformed buyers with plenty of cash looking for alternate investment avenues. There are a lot of younger people who are sitting on sidelines of the stock market right now with lots of cash. This pandemic has really padded a lot of bank accounts.. example .. no overseas vacations, no cruises.. etc. I know some people are hurting but a lot of people are better off financially than ever. Look at the RV market. It’s almost impossible to buy a new one as they are way behind on orders and it’s not us retirees who are buying.
Anyway as always... JMO

Dang, somebody made some serious scratch on that auction! You can tell they redid the original felt lining on the case (you kind of have to after all these years). Agree with the fact that the stocks, at least, aren't original to the box. Maybe the "buyer" saw the while glove treatment and thought it was something super duper special...

It might have been a combination of alcohol and the "click to increase your maximum bid" button. Best off to not mix alcohol with motor vehicles, power tools, firearms, or auction sites.

Well, nice gun, now which would I rather have, that -1 for $3075 or this P&R no dash for $730? Hmmm, will have to think about it. Although the sellers pictures are definitely better. . . . .

If a 317-1 can go for $1,076.01 than nothing surprises me any more
As an owner of a 317-1 with box and paperwork I APPROVE

If you look closely at photo 15 of 45 (use the enlarge button) just forward of that little stop (frame lug) that keeps the cylinder from falling out when it's open you'll see where the frame finish has been worked on or maybe badly photo-shopped. I'll bet there was a "nice" dimple there. I suspect it's been worked hard but cleaned up nicely.

I think you may be right! (I knew I should have asked my mother to cook carrots instead of that spinach... )
I have a Subaru that fits that description to a T. This is why "slightly distressed" is my preferred grade of collectibles. If I bought a gun like that, I might have to paint my car, upgrade my wardrobe...

Not that I didn't feel good about it already, but this makes the price of the 629-4 I just bought look a whole lot better!

I certainly don't want to offend with an "open" low-ball offer, but how about an even $10k for all 3 shipped??

That being said, in late 2019, or early 2020 I won an auction for a M60 no dash in a like new condition with the box for a whopping $455. Needed a good cleaning, but everything looked pristine besides that with the detailed pics. There were at least 10+.
For whatever reason it just really flew under the radar and bidding was very slow.
I wasn't really interested much in the 60, so, I put in a max bid of $460 and went to bed. Pleasant surprise the next day though.

Well with those kinds of selling prices maybe I can get enough for my 629 to buy that Super Charger for my Vette.

Also now you got to add sales tax. For me that would be an extra $250 but I guess if you pay 3k got a 1k gun what’s a little tax?

Maybe it was his Grandpa's gun???
I was at a farm auction several years ago where a Marlin model 60 22LR rifle was auctioned off...(At the time you could buy a brand new one for $60)...there were 2 young men bidding on that rifle...after much spirited bidding it sold for $750...the auctioneer was vey happy but flabbergasted...I went up to the young man that bought the rifle and asked him what was so special about that rifle that he paid that kind of price for it and he said: "It was my Grandpa's rifle"

I guess the 629-1 I bought a while back was a bargain at $950. It just had the cardboard box though..

The wife & I have about 30ish S&W pre-mim we been wondering best how to liquidate them since we sold our home and the money would do better elsewhere invested.
My opinion the gun is worth $1k - 1200.00 I have a pile, if the cylinder drags on the barrel face (a gunbroker 629 I bought) it would be worth less
My under the pillow go to gun is a 629-1 4in I would sell for a fraction of what that sold for.
I have a Horton 1 of 100 629 mountain guns I think its a -4 with box I doubt it bring that much in all honesty LOL
You get two folks in a bidding war that's how they behave, we have all seen used push mowers sell at auction more than new could be bought new at Walmart same situation.
https://postimg.cc/gallery/gwKyb6J
Gunbroker fees are high imo, besides the typical "My dealer wants the gun to ship from another dealer only"
Geez that's a 52 mile round trip to Coopers for us, its a pita the drive & time just to ship.
