Good thing I picked up a 649 last week!

I got one last year. I bought a new 67, had a one piece barrel I traded it in. Wish I didn't now, but I did get an older pinned 67

I seriously doubt S&W will produce less revolvers than they are capable of making. For whatever reason S&W has decided it isn’t in their best interest to produce those items at this time and focus on better sellers.

Company’s are not going to continue making a product that does not show a profit.

What’s the oldest revolver on your list, and what date did S&W first make one?

It’s a long adage of gun production (and most kinds of manufacturing) that to maximize profits and to avoid laying off workers or shutting down machinery in a volatile market then you proceed as follows:

1. When demand is high, you reduce your slate of offerings and shift resources towards bumping up production of the top sellers and discontinuing your more specialized/less popular options.

and

2. When demand is low, you diversify your slate of offerings in order to appeal to a broader and more specialized contingent of potential purchasers, thereby keeping employees and machinery occupied.


We have just left a low demand era where gun companies had to expand their offerings in order to attract buyers and not lay people off. Ruger did this like crazy during the last four years. Smith also hade a very diverse portfolio of revolvers it was offering.
Now we are a year into the period of highest demand in recorded history. Who knows how long this demand will last. It makes sense for Smith to reduce its slate of offerings and instead focus on cranking out lots of the more popular revolvers.
I see these changes as a sign of lots of demand. Not a sign of trouble for Smith.

I sort of agree with you, but a nice 581 or 681 won’t sit in a shop long and usually bring darn good money. Definitely a following but probably not enough to make a catalog item

Business decision. Semi-auto pistols are better sellers today than revolvers. Polymer receiver semi-auto pistols are less expensive than metal receiver semi-auto pistols. S&W is going where the market is going which is smarter than sticking with producing products that have little demand because other manufacturers are making what the market wants.

The demand for revolvers in the US is pretty consistent from year to year and is a small percentage of the handguns sold. Most of the revolvers made by Smith go out of the country. I'm guessing that these decisions are based more on global market demand. Smith is not going to get out of the revolver market and creating new revolver models is not a big deal as they are basically all turned out on the same machinery. Most of the influx of new sales is semi auto for self defense. The increased capacity created by turning away from revolver production will go towards semi auto production to meet this new demand. Once the new demand is met or the demand for revolvers increases, you will see production ramp up again. I find it hard to believe that the model 64 is gone forever.

Yup, but I can wish they'd bring them back so I can get a few more backups.

And in fact, hasn't Taurus decided that it would fill that void with its own Model 65? That must mean there is demand, yes?

That list is only partially accurate. They may be discontinuing some of those models but most are still in production just not with the same Product code. With the exception of the 45ACP revolvers (that is sad) they offer at least one of every model that is listed just in a different configurations. There are 629s, tons of J frames in 38 spl and 357 mag, They did also discontinue the Model 64 and 67. But 38 specials service revolvers have been dead soldiers for decades. I am not sure why they even brought them back. Maybe nostalgia and those that wanted one have probably already purchased one. There is a model 64 at a LGS that has been there for months. In all the gun craze it's not moving.
I do not understand the x25 series. That one doesn't make sense. I would think hey would sell better than the 9 and 10mm revolvers. Obviously not.
I just posted / started a thread earlier... S&W has 53 different revolvers in it's 2021 catalog. That doesn't include different barrel length and sight configurations. I am skeptical they can produce that many.

Put me down as a Model 13 fan. Don't have a 65 or 581 yet but they're both on my wish list. Love the old school look of the fixed sights and find them just as accurate.

I have everything I want for the most part except a light J frame 327. I plan on picking up a 460 someday say 5 or 6" with no ports.

Just purchased a PC 625, and it looks like not a moment too soon. Hate to see the 45ACP revolvers go. It makes for a fine revolver cartridge.

There's a sweet 327 on GunBroker bidding at $880 with only 2 days left. It's a beaut.

327 is N frame. I'm thinking you meant 317. 3" J frames are pretty hard to resist.

Since this category is “1980 to present”, then anything in that time frame should be listed. And in that category, the 547 should top that list. Along with the 13, of course.

The Model 520, made for the NYSP was only made IIRC in 1980.

Also, there are both variants of the Model 22 in 45 ACP, and the Model 681 and as mentioned earlier, the 581.

I purchased a PC 629 44 magnum with 7 1/2 inch compensated barrel a couple of years ago and I see it is now discontinued. Too bad it is a great shooter and perfect gun for deer here in Illinois.

Well I'm glad I picked up an M&P 340CT + 325 Thunder Ranch last year. I'm also glad they are still making the 610. That one is on my short list, a nice 610 and a lever action in 44 mag, just don't tell the wife.

The 610 and I'm sure many others were dropped at one time or another only to be resurrected further on down the road.

No one's mentioned the Night Guard series. Fine revolvers that had bad timing and never caught on. That's fine though. Makes my 386NG more valuable!

Beyond that, I think it might also be a wise marketing tactic. Any time a certain model is discontinued, there are always those who got left behind, and also a growing number of customers who would like to have one. Reintroducing another limited run of that product years down the road usually guarantees a surge in buying of said product. I'm an example of one such potential customer. I've heard that companies like Henry and Marlin have in the past made and sold lever guns chambered in .41 magnum. I and (if the online chatter is any indicator) lots of others, would love for them to begin making them again. Well, as soon as one become available again, they've got my money

There’s two more I see missing from the list. The 619 and 620. I have a 619, it’s one of my favorite .357s. I actually bought it in Germany, so it even has German proof marks. It cost 357 euros, ironically enough. I don’t think that run of 619/620s was very long.

No nickel finish, repeat no nickel finish. Even General Patton liked nickel finish.

I think ruger is way faster to discontinuing certain models faster than s&w is. Colt forget it. What tells the gun manufacturers what’s not to manufacture? Low sales?

Look at ruger’s first offerings of the Redhawk in 41 mag and 357 mag the 357 was offered for 2 years. Now decades later it’s back having 8 rounds.

It’s like Jeep with the Wrangler series. The suv is selling and in demand so they hault the Wrangler production. Smart people steering there ship.

Ouch, I just bought a 325 Thunder Ranch new last week as my first 45 acp revolver after decades of being on my mind, had no idea it was discontinued. ☹️

Doubt the dealer did either as he gave me at least a tiny bit of a discount in this age.

FWIW - S&W ceased to exist as a revolver manufacturer to me quite a few years back. I just cannot get past that hole. I don't know what it is. Logically I understand all of the manufacturing changes etc. Maybe it is just symbolic, but whatever the reason - I'm out.

I really don’t consider pink grips as a model maker. You don’t find anywhere on the gun that says “pink grip model” do you. If I handed you a Model 642 with rubber boot grips that were pink and changed to black would you look at it and say to me “Oh I see you changed the grips on your pink model 642”.

My newer s&w revolvers with the hole are as good if not better than the older revolvers. They have the best upgrades these revolvers have ever had. If s&w discontinued the loc everyone will be scrambling to buy one for there collection, they will enter the s&w history phase.

Are the newer classic models considered "discontinued?" I think there's an argument to say that they aren't like the originals.

I been watching the used s&w N frame prices closer than a stock market investor. There almost double the cost of a new S&W N frame. The newer s&w N frame gets my vote.

The only one of those I don't have but would consider buying is a 649 357 Magnum.

I like humpbacks.

Like the 632. Checked the price on one of those of late? That was one they should have produced in 2" to give people a choice between 38 spl and 357 mag. .357 in a J frame is an abomination, yet S&W thinks it's relevant. I'm honestly starting to think that the people who decide what gets built have zero range time on any of their products.

Some of those on that list are history. The future is 9mm polymer striker. I've even come around to polymer, I own a P-30 and a HK45, but a strikers be like rat poison.

I totally agree. Shooting mag rounds in my little 3" Model 60 just isn't fun. For me if it's not 35 oz or above I just stick with .38 Special. The engineers at Smith can do wonders with the new alloys but shooting maggies in those small revolvers just doesn't make sense.
