Default 66-1 4 inch price check

I picked up this 4 inch Model 66-1 a while ago and it was just too nice to shoot. I have several other J, K, and N frames chambered in .357 so this one has just been sitting in my safe. I was thinking of taking it to the Lakeland show and trading it on a couple of nice shooter grade Smiths or a nice lever gun and a Smith or something along those lines. I have looked on GB and found a very similarly configured 66-1 with box, tools and paperwork that went for $1475. I think mine is in at least as nice condition, if not better. I would like to get the thoughts of some of the forums experts at where I should put it for trade value and outright sale value if someone wanted to buy it.

Here is the GB ended listing: S&W 4" SS PINNED & RECESSED .357 COMBAT MAGNUM MODEL 66-1 ORIG BOX PAPERS - Revolvers at GunBroker.com : 886295381

Edit to ad: Mods, this may be in the wrong section. SCSW4 puts it at 1980 manufacture, but it does have a pinned barrel. Please move if need be. Thank you.

GB is good for getting a rough idea as to what your gun might sell for but there are caveats. To get top prices it is very helpful, if not required, to be a frequent GB seller with lots of sales and positive feedback. Lots of good pictures are needed too. And then you need two or more motivated bidders hopefully sitting at home drinking a little bourbon and each determined to win. I look at upper end sales on GB and then assume a 20-30% reduction to get to local market prices where I shop if you want to sell fairly quickly. Your package should sell for around $1000 where I shop, maybe a little more if you're patient. I have the same gun from 1980 in 98+% condition without box/papers and it would sell where I shop for around $800+/-. Good luck.

I have a total of seven 66's. Three are four inch -1's. I have been able to find them locally cheaper. The last one purchased was in December. It is in close to the same condition but no box or papers. I paid $550 but spent another $100 to replace the plastic grips.

I have another 4 inch which came with the correct box but no tools. I purchase it a couple of years ago for $750 I believe. I think the $1000 territory would be correct if not a little higher due to the virus. YMMV. Good luck with your sale.

I have been either shooting, gunsmithing, selling as an ffl, and collecting for over 40 years even in todays sellers market I really don't see you getting two smiths for yours ,
if nib with all the paper work and tools , of course yeah,.
but IMO with a used and from your pics shot a lot 66, no.
In your pics I am seeing a very nice 66, with a fairly significant gas burn line above the cylinder gap on the frame,
so not so pristine ,
In person it might show better or worse,
I can't say..but is it worth a grand? In todays market probably, last year no way, good luck in your quest in getting 2 for one but just don't see it happening.

My gues would be $800 tops, probably $750 realistically.

Would easily be an $800 gun in NW Louisiana. But the way things are now, you could probably not find one (in any condition). Great looking gun. I would hate to have to sell such a fine revolver. Good luck.

Gunbroker prices don't often come close to trying to sell locally. With GB there is obviously a much larger pool of potential buyers. Bought a rifle in November locally for $650 and seen them on GB selling for over $1000.

I took my 66-1 to a few gun shops a few years ago and one guy did not even want it at all and the other was giving me an offer I had to refuse. Even with today's madness of gun buying I'd probably be lucky to get what I paid for it locally.

The 357 revolver market might be more desirable in your area, here in NW Indiana its like walking in with a dead racoon.
