Default S&W 500 - Hogue Tamer

Anyone have issues with their stock Hogue Tamer grips on the S&W 500? Mine are slowly deteriorating and they are kind of too squishy if you ask me.

I’m thinking about picking up some Hogue Bantams for it. Yes I know it will expose the back strap. I use the Bantams on my Redhawk with the heaviest of 44 Mag loads and my hand feels locked in unlike any other grip I’ve tried.

Anyone else use Bantams on a 460 or 500?

I've been shooting 500 Mags since 2003. I tried some gorgeous Hogue laminated grips. Liked them as they mitigated recoil by muzzle rise like a SA Army Colt revolver but the recoil destroyed them, Hogue no longer makes them.

I tried a set of Herrett's Jordan Troopers made to fit my hand. Nasty, no recoil mitigation, just hammered the palm. Sold them to a forum member and did tell him my thoughts. Surprisingly, he liked them.

Bottom line, the factory grips are the best out there for comfort and recoil mitigation. Good luck. Don

I tried the 686 stock grips on the 500 and it was comfortable to shoot but it was pushing the seams of the grips apart along the back strap. So I’m going to give the Bantams a try.

I consider the stock Hogue 500 grips to be a consumable, when used consistently with heavy loads.

They seem to last longer in .357 and .45acp guns, and I equip most of my range guns with them.

The soft backstrap area sacrifices itself while saving the web of my thumb the chafing and bleeding other grips have caused. I have rough, scarred, fairly calloused paws...so please don’t think I’m taking off my tea-drinking gloves to shoot.

While not sized with adequate clearance for my middle finger and the trigger guard, the new Pachmayr soft stocks with covered backstrap were the next best thing.

Grip/stock fitment is very subjective and personal. There’s a reason most here have a box, drawer, closet full.

Good luck !

Plus 1 on what PatriotX said. I've worn out at least a half dozen shooting various .44 mags. The worn out ones go on 22s and 357s. Have half a dozen backups.

Those grips are like slicks on a top-fueler. They will transport the material to your hand.

I wrap mine with MOX tape, not to keep them from deteriorating, just to build up to fit my hand
