Default Magna vs Quadraporting on Model 69

I’m thinking of porting my model 69 .44 mag.

I found some YouTube videos where Magnaporting had been done, but also found some that were Quadraported.

What kind of performance difference would there be between the two?

I bought a used 29-2 4” in October that’s Magna ported I honestly don’t see any advantage honestly gets more fouling on barrel around ports no biggie but I do notice a lot louder plus muzzle flash so I’d say save you’re money. Just my opinion be prepared a lot of haters on here against porting and some guys love it. Good luck.

Keep in mind that the resale value of your gun will be less with any porting than it is without.

The market for the gun ported is much smaller than the market for the same gun without ports.

I once owned a model 29 with an 8 3/8 inch barrel that was Magnaported. It did seem to make a little difference with heavy loads, especially muzzle rise, less so with perceived recoil in the palm of your hand. Blast seemed about the same as a non ported gun.

I have read that it is less efficient with less then full loads, or in shorter barrels.

Don't know if that is helpful, but if it were my gun, I probably wouldn't do it.

ADDED - I have a S&W .44Hunter that has a muzzle brake, and that does seem to reduce both recoil and muzzle rise, but it's not Magnaporting.

I only put 18 rounds thru an older 6" 29 a buddy had. I didn't see any advantage, and I didn't like the noise. Almost never see them on the range.

I have a 3" double Magnaported (4 slit ports) 629 and a 4" 29. Finally got around to testing side by side with the same ammo. MUCH less recoil with the 3".

FWIW, Pachmayr Presentation Small grips on the 4" 29, Fishpaw checkered walnut grips on the 3" 629. I consider both to be excellent grips.

I had a revolver ported years ago. muzzle flip was almost eliminated, but the recoil was then straight back and painful. I won't have one ported again.

Other than the “cool” look factor, waste of time and money.

You shouldn't hold back, go all the way and have it Octoported.

The type of porting that you do, or compensator that you install is dependent on what ammunition you want it to be effective with

If you want to shoot mid-range target loads, then Mag-na-Porting is a waste of money. You need to be looking at an expansion chamber compensator

Any kind of "porting" works best with large volumes of rapidly expanding gas.

If you want something that will reduce muzzle rise with 44 Special type loads a single expansion chamber compensator is the way to go
Smith & Wesson sometimes calls this a POWER PORT

If you look at every serious IPSC shooter, they have a pistol with one or more expansion chambers in the Compensator. If it did not work, these competitors would not all have them

Sure. Just costs more for that work at Magnaport.

Groo here
I have a "few " revolvers that are ported.
As a shooter I could care less about the "collection" value.
I want "shootablity"
Porting reduces the "rotation" of the gun not the "kick"
This changes how the gun kicks , less in the thumb area ,more in the palm.
The more the pressure the better it works.
As to "blast, there is little difference in blast or flash or noise." a revolve is already "ported" it is called the BC gap at the cylinder]
If you shoot low power loads, porting is usually not needed, but full power loads will show a difference...

I have the 629 Trail Boss which is ported. I haven't had any issues with the porting as far as blast or flash. I is a factory porting in that the factory had them sent out to Magna Port. I've thought about getting my 69 done. The one in the linked video is pretty cool except I don't like the stripes.

My buddy was a MaxieBlastie fanboi, had to have every too large caliber possible. He got a 460 S&W 10" barrel revolver, which is shooting basically a full load rifle round....I forget the exact load. It was a magnificent beast & not all that uncomfortable even with the massive sonics.

He wasn't satisfied so shopped around & came up with the short version at ?4"? if I remember right, absurdly short, yet with factory porting too.

I stood behind him as he fired first one, then another, then more slowly a third before offering it to me to finish. Not only was sonic blast phenomenal, so what the massive infrasound down in the range of cycles-per-second that whales and elephants talk to each other miles apart. It was so intense even standing behind him it about untied my shoes.

I turned down my chance to experience from the shooters view point. The last I knew, he still had the original box of ammo with just 3 missing.
I know it wasn't fun for me, nor him. And the point of having such a caliber is lost on my understanding. It actually made the 500 Mag blast seem smaller by comparison.

At our club, firebreathers are used only outdoors. The muzzle blast must not have been sent in my direction - I don't even remember it. Surely no different from my 4" unported.
