Default ENGRAVED 29-10 - NEEDING HELP ASAP!!

OK, I actually try to avoid asking for values and I certainly try to avoid being tempted by IL offerings, but alas.........

Aside from typical, "Auction" prices, I'm needing advice on the price of a factory engraved 29-10. It appears to be unfired (I have not physically inspected it), but no box, etc......
Help me out guys and gals, what would a buy and tuck it away price be?

You'll have to post pictures or at least a detailed description if the engraving experts here are going to help you much. Factory engraving used to be at least three different levels (A, B, C) and perhaps still is. Not at all sure what pricing rules apply to a newer (IL) engraved gun. Without box and without inspecting it how do you know it is factory engraved?

Here is an image sent from seller.... We are close enough so as to be able to see it physically, but don't want to waste either of our times if the price is WAY out of line....which is under $1k. Would be much more comfortable with pricing if with box, docs, etc...

That’s laser engraving, not hand engraving.

A decade or so ago, you could send your gun back and have that done for under $100. I’ve got the brochures somewhere in my stash. IMO, it doesn’t add to the value and personally, I’d prefer the same model without it.

Individual tastes vary, so take mine with a grain of salt.

Thanks Chad. Your, "grain of salt" is worth an Ohio secondary road winter in my book!

Again, just an opinion but I think it takes away from the value.

I found my brochures and the price list from around 2002. You may find this interesting...

That is not laser engraving! It is mechanical engraving.

That old laser engraving predates the factory mechanic engraved 29-10 variant.

It brings to mind the fake wood they used to put on cars.

I had my 4506 laser engraved when I bought it, probably over 30 years ago - maybe more. That engraving isn't even similar to laser, so I'd have to go with surfgun.

Thanks for the information, I suspect you’re both correct. I assume it’s still save to say that mechanical engraving doesn’t increase the value like hand engraving does.

That is machine engraving. Lots of companies are doing it. Machine engraving has been going on at Smith & Wesson for at least 2 decades now. It is a inexpensive way to embellish a firearm.

The factory engraved 29-10s were released around the same time the 75th anniversary Model 27s hit.

They used it on a small number of the Model 40s when they were re-released at the -1 engineering revision

Smith & Wesson also used this on the Texas Hold'em Model 36

At the time they were available, these revolvers were only about $150 - $200 more than their plain Jane counterparts and they came with nice presentation cases

I love hand engraving, but many of these machine engraved offerings from Smith & Wesson were exceptional values

I would buy a non engraved guy over this one if they were the same price. I do not call that engraving, it is an insult to so many of the masters who engraved by hand and spent hours and weeks on a piece to create a work of art. These guns are not art, but then again, I am not buying, but someone else will have a different opinion.

That Model 40 re-pop has been in my favorites folder since I first saw it... I'm amazed it's machine-done. You learn something new every day!

It sounds like you're anticipating to flip it in some period of time. Frankly, no savvy collector of "engraved" revolvers is going to be impressed by it. I also think the average revolver buyer isn't going to want that fru fru looking embellishment if a more mainstream revolver is available.

But, even with what I think is a limited resale market, there no reason not to buy it if the price is right. The bullets still come out the right end. It's just not a premium revolver to me.
