14-4 cylinder stop problem
Picked up a 14-4 today, it is an internet purchase. The revolver looks good, but when dry firing the cylinder would spin free every once in awhile. Looks like the cylinder stop is sticking in the down position allowing the cylinder to spin. Ideas?

First thing I'd do would be to remove the side plate & clean out the innards with something like brake cleaner, etc. It's a start anyway.

A detailed disassembly, cleaning and lubrication is the first thing I would do.

after cleaning,if problem persists, check if the cyl stop is not bent and rubbing heavily on one side of the slot in the frame. This is the result of guys who spin the cyl and close it while cylinder still spinning.
If bent, change cyl stop.If not,the spring that activates it might be too weak.Just change the spring.
Good luck and enjoy your mod 14.They are excellent pieces of machinery.

I took the side plate off, looks new inside. I couldn't see any obvious problem. The gun looks new all over and dates to 1981.

Just a guess, but is the cylinder stop spring intact?

Yes, single action is fine, just occasionally in double action. Maybe some dried grease or oil in spring. Ill take the plate off again when I get some time. The shop owner that did the transfer was able to get the stop to stick and the cylinder spun free until the stop popped up. The top of the stop looked even

Yeah, but if the problem is a stop that is bent due to being spin-slammed then it may be dragging on one side of the frame slot. might be kinda hard to actually see, just looking at it.

The stop spring can be tricky to get seated correctly which could be your issue as well as cylinder flipping / bent stop that has been described.

I suspect you are the victim of a common problem known as C R U D (!!!!).
That detailed disassembly and cleaning mentioned up above is a cure for a whole bunch of problems caused by folks who don't do it----they being what's sometimes known as the Spray Can Crowd-----beloved by they who make/sell the wide variety of miracle gun cleaners in spray cans----all of which puts me in mind of fishing tackle.
I submit as many as 9 out of 10 folks who might be questioned as to the purpose of fishing tackle will tell you it's made to catch fish. Let me suggest it's made to sell to fishermen.
Think about it!!

I 100% agree that the most likely cause is some crud or hardened oil. most likely inside the cylinder stop spring. While a detailed strip would be best a can of brake cleaner using the small tube, once the side plate is off, to direct the spray into the blind hole for the stop spring and every other crevice will not hurt anything and will break down most crud. I like spray brake cleaner. Spray on lubricants not so much. They put to much oil in places that don't need any. Spray brake cleaner is better than tearing them down when you don't know what you are doing.
