Default Value of this 57-1 package please

I’ve got an opportunity to purchase 6” 57-1 in box, revolver is in fantastic condition with barely a turn line. Comes with 360 of HP ammo, what do you think a fair price would be for all of it.

Thanks in advance

I guess this is why we ask these questions, I was thinking twice that with the gun ammo would have been fair.

It's hard to tell from your photo but in my opinion that's a very shiny blue for a S&W of that vintage. Some close ups of the markings would help. Also the condition of the box would help. If the revolver is reblued but in good mechanical condition with a good bore, then I think a fair market value of today would be
$ 850 as a "working " gun. If the revolver is original finish and the box is as fine, then I would think the value might be between $ 1250-$1450 in today's market. As for the ammo, if it's factory loaded then it's probably worth 50 cents a round but if it's hand loaded then its best not to trust it and and value it only for components. IrishFritz

The gun is supposedly unfired except from the factory, I didn’t state it because I don’t really know although it looks it. All roll marks are crisp, box has unused tools no papers

You can’t find .41 mag ammo anywhere and if you could it’s going for a buck a round.....you don’t mention if there is an asking price for the package but I bet if there was they would be wanting a minimum of 1200 bucks......even if the gun is reblued 750-850 is what I suspect they would be asking for it when glock 19s are in that range now. And no way you are going to find ammo at .50 cents a round, not even .38sp or 9mm is going for that now......times they have a changed.

Assuming that it is "like new in the box," with the ammo, $1000-1100.

I watch 57s on the auction sites and right now a unfired in the box blue -1 6" would sell for no less than a grand and may make $1300....just depends on the day. As to the ammo...a dollar a round at minimum.

That ammo alone is worth over 400 bucks, easy. When was the last time you saw .41 mag silver tips for sale? I bought a box from a LGS several years ago that had sat on the shelf gathering dust for years and it had a $27.99 price tag in it. If the revolver hasn’t been refinished, which I don’t think it has, it truly looks unfired. There isn’t even a turn line on the cylinder. I’d put that package at $1400-$1500. Of course, geographical location matters also; something worth $1000 in one part of the country may command a $1200 value in some areas, while in others, may only be worth $800. But if that revolver package went to auction, I think it would easily get to $1500 or even higher.

What is the asking price? Divide by four and add $1.00 for each round of ammunition being offered, multiply each individual revolver by 20%, subtract that number from the sub total and calculate the total. Then get out your check book, Visa card or cash. The 20% discount is for cash in unmarked bills.

In today's market, if this gun and ammo is under $1500., and you can afford it.... grab it or somebody else will !!
This would go on Gunbroker fast at that price !
I know, as I had been looking myself for a couple months, before finally getting mine a couple weeks ago.

I was told to come over, take a look and make an offer, that’s why I wanted some opinions before I head over.

Appreciate all the responses

The 4th Ed. Standard Catalog lists the M57 as worth $1200 ANIB, but that edition is now 4 years old. There are premiums for age and other factors. I gave $1300 for my gun without a box, papers or even the factory stocks, but it is an "S" prefix from 1968 and that carries a price premium. I can't find the specific 3 letter prefix in the listings, but AZA is 1988, yours is AZB, so the assumption would be a similar age, and the M57-2 was released in 1988. The three letter codes are notoriously difficult to date accurately without a letter from S&W. My guess the value of yours would be $1200-$1400 in unfired condition. Even supposedly unfired guns can have a perceptible turn line, it's hard not to "play" with one while admiring it.

The deep rich blue is characteristic of this model, my M57 no dash looks almost black from a short distance. That is a beautiful example of a really great gun.

I'd love to find some 175 grain bullets like the Winchester ammo you show. That stuff probably has a MV of around 1500 fps from a 6" barrel, a hot 210 grain load is about 1400. Factory .41 Magnum of any bullet weight is difficult to find, there are few who still manufacture it. It has become a reloader's caliber for this reason, which is all I shoot in mine. Starline is the only company that makes brass for the caliber and Hornady has a 210 grain JHP bullet; there are a few other companies who make bullets, but they're not easy to find. At $20/box, which would be reasonable in today's market, the ammo is worth $380 by itself.

I'd like to know what the dash number is on the M48 in the collection. I can see a barrel pin, which would date it to 1981 or earlier. If your funds permit, see if you can work a package deal for the M57 and M48. The K22 Masterpiece Magnum is a fantastic range gun, even suitable for small game, and .22 magnum ammo is much more available than .41 is. I also have one of those. They bring a good price, almost as much as the M57.

That's a wonderful group of revolvers for sale, you wouldn't go wrong buying any one of them, but the .22 and the .41 would be my choices of the four.

My choices were the 48 and 57 also, but the 48 was taken already. The 48 was a no dash so I suspect the original grips were taken off for some targets, but the gun was drop dead gorgeous.

That is a nice looking revolver! $1,000 plus or minus $100 without the ammo. I know I am behind current prices but do not want to overpay.

As for the ammunition I would let them keep it and buy brass to reload. If it is similar in recoil to the Speer GDHP 210g Hunting load-I shot 5 rounds and that was as much recoil as I wanted to put the gun and myself through! Think Model 60 shooting 357 magnum with a lot more recoil!
