Default 629-x grail guns.. what would you want?

I thought I would throw this out as a conversation starter. In your opinion what 629-x would you find most desirable or seek out the hardest if money was not an obstacle. Also why if you know.

I have many many, many..

1. 1st one would be a No dash Pinned barrel N prefix number in 4" and/ or 8 3/8". Just to have an example of a transition from blued as the primary seller to SS.

2. A 2.5 "snubby by Lew Horton in 1999 pre lock prod code 170135. 300 made or the 2.5" pre lock for Camfour Prod Code 103839 in 2000.. or both. These were 2 of very very few 2.5" guns S&W made in the 629 configuration. I think there was 1 more product code. but I am not positive.

Anyone else have favorites they would like to have?

I would like to have a NIB Alaska State Trooper 629-3. I have one in shooter grade, below. Only 15 were made, so there are 14 others out there somewhere. Oh, and a 5 inch Classic DX too.

When this 629-5 Extreme Hunter fell into my hands earlier this year my 629 grail list was complete. Anything else is just a bonus.
(Thanks Paul)

I came across my grail 629 last year in the form of the 629-3 Mag Comp II. This one is has a product code of 170026, one of 100 produced in 1993.

I forgot about the Comp 2 shown by 686PC. That would be one of my top picks as well.

Ignore the Parkerized custom 58 in 44 mag (it is not a 629 and doesn't count)
629-5 Camfour 2 5/8 fixed sights Top photo far right
629-3 Carry Comp

The one that I traded to Rick Houston for a 4" Mod. 28-2. It is a 3" 629!

Hope Rick is enjoying it!

I am in severe jealousy over that 2 1/2 Camfour. The Jovino too but thats unobtanium. Actually I would like to have all of them. I have the Mountain Gun. 629-4 and the 629-2 Mountain revolver.

My only 629 grail guns were a -4 Mountain gun and 3” 629-1, I now have 2 of each. There are a lot of other cool 629s, but for me the MG and 3” have the utility and aesthetic I wanted.

I have been searching for the 629-2, 7 1/2" classic. Full lug, non-fluted cylinders with counter bores. I've only seen one many, many years ago. Have all the other barrel lengths in that configuration except for that one that eludes me..

I really like the way my 6 inch Classic Hunter balances and shoots. It is my go to hunting revolver when I am not using an optic.

Default 629-3 3” PC Carry Comp II

There has been plenty of 629s that have come and gone. But when I had the chance to acquire this grail gun, I knew I had to go after it. I have no plans on letting this one go anytime soon.

686PC, nice to see yours.

Ditto. My favorite revolver is a 5" 629-6 "Classic" (full-underlug). It's a relatively new one though ... made just a few years ago. It's my EDC.

Mine is a special run from RSR Wholesale back in 1983. A 629-1 with polished trigger, football combats, and Magnaport. Not sure how many were made.

Since we are showing some hardware here are 3 of my shorty favorites.
The top left is a Classic Carry 629-4
Purchase from a forum member. The next is the 329 Alaskan Backpacker IV
( not technically is 629 but I really like it.
The bottom one is my most recent .44 magnum 629-5 Trail Boss 3”
RSR Exclusive magna ported and shipped that way. Product code 104308. The -4 shipped in this shipment as well from 1996-1999 with same product code. I wish I had the -4 but I won’t throw it out!

Hope I am not changing the subject to ask if there is any particular rarity to my no-dash NXXXXXX. It is counter bored but not pinned, which I assume makes it a transition piece of some kind? Probably not anything that would alter the value?

I don't keep it in the presentation case but think maybe this year I will finally get that liner re-flocked. This one came from my Dad so it is here to stay!

I found my grail gun two years ago, walked into a LGS and there was a LNIB 629-4 Trail Gun. I love the looks and feel of the trail guns and the -4 was the one I wanted.

The Scandium gun has some spunk to it. I have only shot factory .44 magnum loads. Like the 340PD and 360PD the torque is worse than the actual recoil. But we had a lot of fun with it a few weeks ago...We were comparing the SW 500 4" vs 460ES 2.75" vs the 329 3". The 500 is still king of recoil. But the 329 has a different type of recoil this is not the most pleasant gun to shoot. Still they are all a blast IMO. And the 2.75" 460ES is no slouch either.

I'd really like to have a -3 Carry Comp. But, it's the one I'll probably never have.

I still need a DX for my collection as well.

I got my 2 "Grail Gun 629s" and feel darn lucky about it.

Mine was one of the elusive 629-3 Classic DXs with a five-inch barrel but a few years and $800 ago, I found one.

What does the "DX" imply? I.e., what's different about it from other 5" Classic (full-underlug) 629's?

Thirty-odd years ago when S&W was test-firing Model 29 and 629 Classics, the ones that demonstrated better accuracy had the letters "DX" added to the barrel markings and were packaged with their test target (only two of the available barrel lengths, however), a set of front sight inserts and a set of Combat stocks in addition to the S&W-marked Hogue MonoGrip.

The five-inch DX models were only available for the one year the original Classic versions of the 29 and 629 were made in that barrel length, 1989. You can tell that the "DX" was added after the fact because those two letters made the "29/629 Classic DX" marking off-center on the barrels.

I want a really nice blued model 27 with a 5" barrel. I think it is a beautiful handgun. I have a pre lock 29 also on my list 4" and a 6.5" would not mind having a 629 in those barrel lengths either.

I have been fortunate to acquire a couple desirable 629's over the years:
629-2 Mountain Revolver.
629-3 Classic Stainless 5".
629-4 Mountain Gun.
All are shooters, none were particularly difficult to find in local classifieds. Strangely, the most difficult 629 for me to locate was a plain garden variety 629-4 with standard 6" barrel. Apparently people like them and keep them. However, a square butt 629-4 6" appeared locally in December 2019, then a round butt arrived from Montana a few weeks later in February 2020. Fortune smiled again when, in November 2020, a mint 29-5 MagnaClassic 7.5" came my way.

Now the hunt is on for a 629 MagnaClassic and Classic DX.

Below are the heretofore elusive 629-4's and the impressive 29-5 MagnaClassic.

Default Favorite 629s

My favorites are the 629 no dash, P&R, with an N serial prefix! The 4" was the hardest or me to find. I could find "transition" guns(pinned & not recessed or the other way) nbut it took me a few years to find the right one!

If you ever see a 4", buy it! They are harder to find than the 8 3/8"! I'm too cheap to have someone else refurbish my cases, I did them myself! Not flocking, recovered with a blue cloth!

629-4 backpacker has been my #1 grail gun for a few years. There was believed to be 5000 made in April of 1994. They have either a BR or BS prefix. The early ones came with Hogue medallion grips and the old style pinned ejector. I have laid eyes on many for sale on gun broker, almost bid on a few but ultimately they were selling for more than I wanted to pay. Now I waited to long and they have well exceeded a grand. All I expected to pay was $750-800 if I ever saw one at a gun show or LGS but one never came around.

I really don’t expect to ever get one. The more that sell the more that are off the market for many years. Even if one was put in front of me right now for $1200 I’d probably pass, I have a few guns that will do the same thing.

That'd be the 4" tapered or 'pencil' barrel and chamferred cylinder. This is my 629-4 I've shown on the forum a few times.

Not really a stainless guy, but couldn't resist this consecutively numbered pair of 1988 629-1, Iditarod Commemoratives. Two of 545 produced before the bank that was giving them as premiums folded.

Adios,

Believe the year was 1992 not 1989 for the 5" classic DX .The Classic line of full lug revolvers was introduced in 1990 with the release of the Magna Classics. The 5" DX revolvers also came with test targets like the 6.5" and 8 3/8" versions. I have owned two 629-3 5" Classic DX revolvers and both came with test targets FYI.
