There is one mentioned in the swsc as being non-standard length barrels, but does not use that product code. I too seen the one you are talking about and I think someone already bought it.

I contacted the buyer of that 686-5 7" and ask him about it. He told me he contacted S&W about it and was told there were only 67 of these made and they were made for an international dist.

686, 7" barrel, 7 shot
Bumping this necro-post. Stumbled across one of these today local for sale. It is a 686-5 7" barrel, 7 shot. The frame is a slightly different color of stainless than the barrel, so there is a slight contrast. researching the configuration brought up this old thread. Any one have any more info on this one? They are pretty proud of it at $1299.00. No box or papers, so no product number.

It sounds like the newer Talo 3-5-7 series gun. They came with unfluted cylinders and 3", 5" and 7" barrel lengths. I say about they're about double it's worth without box or paperwork. Retail was only slightly higher than a standard 686+ which was $849 last time I checked.

Hey Gunarsailors, it's quite alright to use my photos. The 686-5 is mine and I Havnt came across any concrete info as of yet. My intentions were to get it lettered, but have not had the time with the holidays. I will make that a priority. I do have a letter that came with the pistol,BUT..........it's not for MY pistol. It's a copy of a a Smith letter to another gentleman about his pistol. But his pistol has the same product code as mine. The Smith Rep. for my LGS called the Smith Performance Center folks and they did not recall ever producing this pistol( it is a Performance Center Product), so he was transferred to the Archive Dept. They researched the numbers and told him that there was ONLY 68 produced.
I will be glad to pass on any info I get when I get it lettered. I have come to my senses and taken it off the block to be sold. Think I'll hang on to it for awhile.

Ok i know this is an old thread but i have a 686 i thought was 6" when i bought it and have had a hard time getting a holster that fit.
I called s&w and they said my 686-5 plus is a 7". He couldn't give me anymore info other than its from 1999.
I don't really see any mention anywhere about a 7" 686.
Any info anyone has would be great.
Oh ya and it has a product code 148718 and social order # 9281.

The ship date based on the Spec. Ord. number is October 8, 1999. I've never seen that product code, so it's something special. A pc that begins with "14", to me, ussally means some kind of special order from one of S&W distributors.
For example, M19's that are chambered in .38 Spl have a "14" pc. Model 10's for the Hong Kong Police were 14's. The State Quarter guns were 14's. It always something special and made in small numbers.
Does your gun have an unfluted cylinder and what kind of grips does it have? Is it marked with a Performance Center logo on the left side?

I recently came across one of these and was able to purchase it. It's a 686-5 with 7 inch full lug barrel. 7-shot unfluted cylinder. Serial number is CEL12## and the product code is 149198 with spec order of 0278. I am just wondering if anyone ever got their letter back from Smith n Wesson on these. Any more info would be greatly appreciated.
