What would you pay for....
....a Model 19 ("-5" I think), non-P&R, but pre-MIM? 4" blued. Factory target grips...not sure on hammer and trigger (only saw side view picture). Gun is one owner, unfired after leaving the factory. No box. Just curious....

$1000 is a fair price if truly unfired

Seems slightly suspicious.
One owner. It was kept unfired. Yet, didn’t think to keep the box?
There’s a good saying ... Buy the gun, not the story. This firearm doesn’t sound like anything especially special. I’m sure it’s nice, but I wouldn’t pay a premium.

G-Mac, several years ago I picked up a 19-5 four ", blued and put a set of magnas on it. Absolutely beautiful, tight and well-made. SN begins AAS.
I know we all love P & R, but a 19-5 can be very fine. Best of luck to you.

I agree, but, I know the owner. I believe him. Why he tossed the box is beyond me.

I am not sure I would go 1000 the gun, but guns are crazy now and it seems like everybody discovered revolvers, especially N frames. As for the box, I can remember when we all threw them out. Who knows 1K may be right, but I am more inclined to be around 900. However if it is what you say, what is an xtra 100 in the long term scheme of things.
Even if guns get soft in price, you won't get burned too badly. Me on the other hand, i won't go the crazy money wanted for a M27 3.5" or a 4" M29

When I got divorced I took off for a long weekend so the ex could move the stuff we agreed she would take. Well she ended up throwing out all the boxes for the guns-they were in the safe under a new combination after we agreed she didn't want any of them LOL. Wasn't that nice of her?
I know prices have gone nuts but for me a "friends" price would need to be about $700 before I'd consider it. Hey I'm cheap and admit it. If it was not a known seller and I really really wanted the gun I'd go as high as $850. Which means I probably wouldn't end up with it in today's market.
I hope you can work out something you are comfortable with.

Thank you for all of the replies. What would this gun have retailed for when new?

Well a Brand New Model 19 Classic is $863 I'd say that would be a good price for comparison.
Model 19 | Smith & Wesson

A person's history is the best predictor of what they'll do. Based on that I would not pay 1 cent for it. Instead I'd go buy a shooter grade Model 19. After you enjoy it that's what it will be anyway. Other members might like that new car odor and not mind a car loosing a few thousand dollars as they exit the dealer's driveway.
Also I'd buy a 6". The extra couple of inches reduce both the price and muzzle blast.

Just my .02. If you're going to shoot it, don't add value for the unfired condition because it's not going to stay that way. If you're going to carry it, don't add value for the mint condition because, say it with me now, it's not going to stay that way. Buy a used 90-95%r and save money.
If you are going to keep it in it's current unfired mint state as a collection/display piece, or as an investment, then those things will have value. It's the value to YOU, the buyer, that you are concerned with and rightfully so. It's only original once, as they say, so these are personal decisions only you can make.
I can't afford it right now, but I would love an unfired classic for display as a centerpiece for my collection, meager that it is.

About 5 years ago I sold a model 19-5, 4" blued with RR, WO, TT, TH, TG. It had been fired but you couldn't tell it. Very low rounds. No box.
A good friend bought it for $400. He offered a lot more. I priced it less. We decided on $400. He was a good friend.
Pre-COVID. Pre-Pandemic prices.
It all depends on how well you know the owner. A good deal is when both parties walk away happy. Ask the owner what he wants for it. If he can't put a price on it, make an offer.
What a firearm sold for new has no bearing on what it will sell for down the road. Circumstances dictate the price.
Just in my humble opinion, if it's a brand new 19-5 4" blued with the goodies, it's worth around $1000.

For me, the Model 19 with a 4 inch barrel is my huckleberry. I would pay $800 for an unblemished gun. I do not collect them I shoot them, so I wouldn't care about unfired. I also couldn't care less about the box. Condition like bluing however is important to me.

I bought a nice shooter grade P&R 4" 19 for $500 last year. I would have to really want/need something to pay these pandemic prices for just about anything. When the prices return to normal, and they will, I'd be kicking myself for years...

Don't hold your breath. Vintage Smiths were bringing record prices before Covid. Ammo prices will go down, but not collectable Smiths.

I still don't know that your wisdom will move me to pay the price for a 3.5" M27 or a 4" M29

Very good condition 19-5's were selling for around $700 back in 2012. That translates to around $820.00 today, with inflation. If this revolver is unfired, like you say, that would add more and considering the current market for firearms, the $1,000 mark does sound fair.

I purchased mine right before Covid for $500, included a second set of grips and a holster. So I would say I'm correct that prices will drop significantly across the board to what they were pre-covid eventually. There are only so many people willing to pay ridiculous prices for the older models just because they are older.
