Can I use 38 Short in a Mod 586?
I cannot find 38 special or 357 magnum ammo for my 586 anywhere. I did find 38 S&W short. Will this fire properly in my revolver?

No, it shouldn’t chamber anyway.

No 38 S&W case is slightly larger diameter than 38 special of 357.

If it will chamber it will work fine.
Depending on the ammo and the revolver the rounds may chamber, or may not.

Sometimes, you will find a .38 special or .357 magnum revolver that has slightly oversize chambers and a .38 S&W cartridge will fit.
Since the round is less powerful than either of the above, .38 S&W would pose no problems.

Are you that desperate for ammo? Personally, if I only had full loads for my guns and no more, I'd wait until the proper ammo was available. I wouldn't shoot but I can wait.

I have about 80 rounds of which 44 are target grade. No one seems to have any idea if and when ammo will be available again. Reading the news it seems like it will only get worse. This is the only firearm we own and I want to make sure we have some capacity. My local stores have no 38 spcl/357 magnum rounds and the only rounds I can find are the 38 short so my thought was to get about 50-100 as something I can use for target practice, and some defense. I would like to try chambering a short but I would have to buy 50 rounds for the test.

When I hear .38 Short, I think .38 Short Colt (SC).
That CAN be fired safely in .38 Special and .357 Mag.

It is not clear to me what type of ammunition you have available. Does the box state .38 S & W, and if so what brand, bullet weight and type? This will typically be 146 gr RNL but Fiocchi makes this in a 145 gr FMJ loading named .38 S & W Corto. I suspect this is what you are seeing, and why you are finding it for sale at all.
As stated above, a .38 Special/.357 with slightly oversized cylinder dimensions might chamber it, but in most guns it probably won't fit.

That is what I thought when I first read the OP.

I tend to only use ammunition the firearm was made for.

If you talking about the Magtech .38 Special Short, then yes.
I have no idea why they make this. It's not .38 Short Colt or .38 Long Colt but actually a short .38 Special. I've been trying to figure out what the case length is. I bet it's longer than the .38 Long Colt.
38 SPL-Short 125GR LRN - Magtech
If you're talking about .38 S&W, then no. You need to be very precise with your nomenclature when it comes to ammunition.

Here is more specifically what I am seeing available; Fiocchi 38 S&W Short 145g FMJ. I tried to post the link to the Palmetto site but it appears the S&W site does not like external links posted. But the description above should be clear as to what I am seeing available.

That's the same ammo referenced by murphydog, corto being the latin word for short.
$1 round for ammo not made for the gun + shipping/tax? I would pass but then I have no idea how desperate up you are for it.

Yes, that is .38 S & W, not a short .38 Special.

My fear is that the situation will only be getting more dismal than the dismal situation it is for the 38 special/357 magnum. I have been to many Internet retailer sites and 38 special ammo is gone. I found some 357 magnum that are reasonable. Then found some 158gr FMJ 50 rounds for $110 plus tax and shipping. Crazy. I might just buy a 9mm semi as the ammo seems available. Sure appears no one is making 38 special at this time. Scarey.

I haven't seen 9mm ammo except the one indoor range around here. It's one of those you can only buy it if you shoot it here type deals. The one good thing is they have a bunch of 10mm and I can buy that and bring it home. Been buying a box a week to supplement my supply.

Not where I live it isn't.
Personally I would try to buy local and ask if the seller will include some ammo. Work out a package deal.

This is one of those "special" situations. In your shoes I would be trying to get a box or two of ammo at the going rate for my security. The ammo you reference is under powered as well as unsuited for your needs. Try Buffalo Bore ammo. It is very expensive in normal times but it is a better buy at times like these...........
