My 629 Talo w/ cylinder crack came back from the factory
My original post can be found here: Crack or scratch in new 629?
The revolver arrived today. I’m a satisfied customer.
The cylinder was obviously replaced with a new one. This one has no flaws that I can find.
They fixed the side plate gouge as well, and removed a deep scratch where the barrel was screwed in the frame. The forcing cone looks like it was cleaned up too. And the gun is as clean as could be.
It’s about as perfect as I can expect at this point.
I’m still disturbed that the cylinder had the fracture and it left the factory like that. But this revolver is now a keeper.

So did they tell you if it was a crack or a scratch?

It's a shame that it made it out the door with that marred cylinder.
Stuff happens and how the issue is handled is what can make or break a company's reputation. That S&W cleaned up other stuff too says a lot.
I joined this forum all butthurt 'cause two S&Ws I bought back to back were defective. They were made good and I somehow survived.

Nice to see that the warranty work mer your expectations. It’s just too bad that it had to take you doing the QC for them.

In the paper that came with gun, it said 'Fractured cylinder' as one of the issues.
Now, I used those words in my letter to them, so I don't know if they just copied and pasted that into their own paper work.
It's clear to me that a new cylinder was fit to the gun (this cylinder has zero turn line, the other one had a line, and lockup is a little different, but not worse).
My guess is, it was indeed a fracture in the steel.

I’d want to know why it cracked too? There’s always a cause.
When I worked for the engineering group we did failure analysis too. In why things broke. We did tests on broken stuff sent back from the field.
With metals and gears some tests proved the metal wasn’t mixed correctly when it was poured into the casting.

Smith and Wesson has always been very brief with their description of what they fix.
I suppose I could call them and ask to speak with the repair shop; but I suspect they wouldn’t tell me the specifics.

Glad that S&W addressed all of the issues, sad that a brand new revolver had to go back to have issues addressed.

Thanks.
I've had to send most of my new revolvers (s&w and rugers alike) back to the factory at least once to get things right. My SP101, brand new, has so much endshake that the cylinder nearly touches the forcing cone. (.004 endshake), and .002 bc gap with the cylinder forward.
I had a model 69 that had a barrel sleeve leaning to the right. and, too much endshake.
I expect, when I buy a new revolver, to have to send it in for a warrenty repair.

As the "Maytag Repairman" (the first and only for a while...) of Glock circa 1988-89, I got chastised by Glock USA's president for being too chatty with customers.
Officially, repairs/adjustments were supposed to be purely parts replacement. Glock Perfection and all that.
