45ACP or 45GAP in a 45 Colt Mt. Gun?
This is probably going to sound like a really dumb question, but is it possible to fire either 45ACP or 45GAP rounds in a 45 Colt Mountain Gun using moon clips? I'm asking because I recently sold almost 1000 unfired Starline 45GAP cases because I knew I didn't have an auto that they would work in, never thinking about the fact that I have three N-frames chambered in 45 Colt. Did I make a really bad mistake? Should I have kept the GAP cases?

Google TKcustom. They machine cylinders for moon clips. Just send them the cylinder assembly and a mo. They did my Jframe. They also do N frame guns like your mountain gun. Plus you can still shoot .45colt as they leave a ring where the long colt brass can rest while the acp in clips sits in the cutout part. Oops, should have kept a couple hundred GAP but .45 acp is everywhere. Plus .45 acp brass would work a little better as there will be less bullet jump and should help with your accuracy.

Thanks for the information. I've got scads of .45 ACP brass but a thread here about .45 GAP caught my eye and made me think about the whole concept. I think what I may actually do is just look for an N-frame in .45 ACP. But I will keep what you said here in mind. Thanks again!

I had pinnacle machine a cylinder to use .45acp in a 625 .45 Colt about 15 years ago.

FYI I called TK to ask if my rimz moon clips would fit OK in the machined area and he said I should send one of the rimz clips with the cylinder if I was to do it.

The 625 is a stainless revolver, bluing not needed. But I would assume that most shops that offer these cuts also offer re-bluing services.

Mine was a stainless gun. But I would either not worry about it, or hit it with some touch-up bluing from Brownells.

I checked out TK Custom and I liked what I saw. Might be time to save some pennies and get one of my N-frames done by them. I'm not sure why; maybe it's just because I think it would be cool to have the option if 'twere necessary...

Look at Pinnacle also then pick between them. They both do great work.

I fixed the problem by years ago by buying a mtn gun in 45 acp. Mine in 45LC just gets 45lc.

One thing to remember with dual cartridge revolvers is each time you swap cylinders you need to resight. I am not keen on that so once I find a load I like, that is all I use in that revolver.
I am gradually getting rid of my long Colt revolvers in favor of the 45 ACP.
