Default Snubbie Junkie - M649

Good Morning All,

I hope everyone is well today.

As stated I'm a dyed in the wool snubbie junkie, I have a chance to add to my addiction a 649 the newer .357 version. They are asking $650 for it, I'm thinking closer to $550 b/c I choose not to participate in crazy.

I'm I lowballing the guy?

Thanks & Take Care,

Dave

Depends on the demand for the humpbacks in the area.
Personally, i would pay $650 2 years ago assuming nothing else wrong.

Stupid prices rule nowadays!! I think the $550 OTD offer is not unreasonable. Depends on how bad you want it. It's a good looking gun. If I added up all the higher than normal prices I have paid on firearms for the past 50 years, the amount would be staggering.

Nice Grips!
As already posted, $650 may be the going price.
Here’s mine.

Dave,
Who doesn't LOVE Snubbies?

$650 is not unreasonable for any stainless J-Magnum that is in the box and in excellent + or better condition

I presume the original rubber grips are included along with the wood grips.

I would walk in with the $550 cash in one pocket, but I would have 5 $20s sitting in the other pocket just in case I needed a few

Difficult to guess a price w/o having the item in one's hand. It comes down to condition. Stainless guns clean up more easily than blued guns, so even a heavily-used example can look minty. There's a sticky somewhere here on examining used revolvers prior to purchase: must reading! Good luck and good shooting.

P.S. If this is a private sale and you have made the reasonable $550 offer, I'm surprised he didn't bite. Then again, as I've written before, a lot of optimists out there. Me, I wouldn't pay $650 in this instance.

I guess I'm old school, but a .357 magnum J-frame holds no charm for me. .38 special +P is just under my recoil pain tolerance, and is close enough for defense purposes. This is my 649-4 shipped in 1997- look ma, no hole! It's equipped with Hipgrips and a Tyler grip adapter.

Prices today are all over the wall. The only ones missing are the pre-covid ones. These days, if the condition is excellent, and as the pictures 'suggest', comes with the original box and paperwork, that price is not exceptionally high. I really like my (older) 649, and it has become my constant companion. I have no need for the magnum, so the .38 Spl. fills my needs. As for me and the price, I'd maybe go $600. OTD. BUT, I'm not you, and if it moves you, offer less and (as previously suggested) be prepared to spend the $650. I am slightly biased as I too like snubbies. My last six purchases have been little guys of the earlier Chiefs Special persuasion.

Here is my EDC:

Stick to $550 and let it go to someone that needs a snub more than you.

I would pay $650 for a nice example sans IL. I am still regretting passing up a beautiful, nickel 49 last summer - $495. However I just picked up it’s big, ugly brother, the 296 44 spl.

I EDC a M49 and John pretty much nailed both reasons I would have little interest in what you are looking at.

The first is the lock, but that is entirely personal.

The second and important reason, is the .357 Magnum capability. Even with non +p loads my M49 is still a handful and really close to my pain threshold. 357? I could just ask someone to smack my hand with a baseball bat and avoid the muzzle flash and hearing loss.

But to fit the .357 cylinder, pretty much everything had to be redesigned and now the shape is different. Not a big bunch, but enough to be noticeable. Not so with the .38 spcl 649s.

Unless you're really set on the magnum, I, myself, would give it a pass, or, stick with the $500 offer.

Rob

I bought this one in 1995. A local PD was transitioning from revolvers to autos. They had 3 of these in surplus that had never been issued. All never fired. I was third in line so I could only get 1. Paid $150.
For 20 years prior I had been carrying a blued 49 everyday as my second, off duty, UC gun. If I was out of the house the 49 was on me. In 1995 I sort of retired the 49 (wife adopted it) and I've been carrying this 649 ever since. I had rubber grips on it when I was working. After I retired my wife decorated it for my retirement gun.
It's a great shooter and one I'll never part with.

That seller has had that one posted for a long time for $700. He just dropped to $650. I think $550 is good, but I'm not sure he's ready for that.

Good luck. My -3 says hello.

Old school has it correct!

To paraphrase:

Quote:
I guess I'm old school, but a .357 magnum J-frame holds no charm for me. .38 special +P is just under my recoil pain tolerance, and is unnecessary for defense purposes. This is my 649-4 ------- look ma, no hole! It's equipped with a Tyler grip adapter.
I don't know what the going rate is for a M649 but I'd do my best to obtain it.
