Default Mountain Gun value

Have a shot at a MG 629 locally for $750. Post-lock 44 mag with matte finish (or at least not as shiny as the old nickel finish), no P&R, has a lock by the cylinder release, etc. Looks to be about a 3" barrel, but not 100% sure on that.

I'm not an expert on S&W. My only S&W right now is an old 10-2 that was my grandpa's, and a Shield 9mm that is my carry gun. Any help on value on this MG would be appreciated. I don't think he has box or manual, but it looks to have been carried none and fired little.

Seriously, welcome to the forum. For a carried none and fired little example I would put that at full retail before the siliness. Now? Buy it. Sell a dog or a kidney if you have to.

Even with the lock $750 is a good deal for a MG, the older MG and Mountain Revolver will bring near twice that.

Of all my revolvers, I think the MG has the quintessential combination of looks and utility.

Thanks guys!

I'll let you know if he sells it to me. I get the feeling I may be a couple back in line, so I'm not sure if it'll work out or not.

Welcome to the Forum.

A Mountain Gun will have a 4" barrel and be labeled as such on the barrel. It will also have a round butt, a tapered barrel and a black powder chamfer on the front of the cylinder. If it truly is a 3" barrel, buy it anyway. I believe 3" barreled .44 Magnums command a premium.

Welcome and congrats.

At that price, I would have been on it like blue bonnet.

It's a 4" - I was mistaken. It has a round butt, tapered barrel, and I'm not sure about the chamfer but I'm sure it has that too. Pics I've seen are a little blurry.

Welcome. Prices vary widely by region, condition and slight model differences in good times, these days it also changes within the time I type this, then again before you can read it!

Another naive noob falls victim to the ol “Mountain Gun” scam🤭

Since you’re new and didn’t know what a piece of junk you were buying, I’ll give you $375 for it, so you can recoup half of your loss.

Congratulations! I picked up a 625-6 MG in 45 Colt earlier this year for just under $850. The previous owner installed a McGivern gold dot front sight, but I am really liking this revolver. It's the perfect partner to my pre-safety 45 Colt Winchester Trapper.

There's pre-lock for sale here in my area - for $1200. Just the gun, nothing else. It looks to be in pretty good shape, but not worth $1200 - at least not to me.
$750 for one with a lock is more like what I'd be willing to pay.

Quick update - just shot it for the first time. Could not love it any more. Smooth and solid - just the right size to be handle-able and carry-able when we go hiking in bear country but big enough that recoil isn’t awful.

Also found a guy selling a beginner loading setup for 44 mag, so now I have bullets/powder/brass/dies as well. Really excited about the new rig. Made my old 64-5 38spl a lot easier to let go of (wife said I had to sell something)
