I had the first one of those that came to Lynchburg, VA when they were introduced about 30+ years ago. In my ignorance I let it get away from me just a few years later, but it wasn’t too long before knew I’d messed up. I have a couple of other (custom) K frame 32s now, but I sure wish I’d kept that 16-4!

One is a good start Bruce but you're going to need at least two after you shoot that one. Costs less to shoot than .22LR these days when loaded with cast bullets and 3 grains of TiteGroup. Very nice, enjoy, and great pictures, again.

Great find! And your pictures are great too! I got my 16-4 in a convoluted trade about 25 years ago. The only think I didn't like about it are the square butt combat stocks. The finger grooves just don't work for me, but that was any easy fix by replacing them with K frame targets. Enjoy yours.

Every time I take mine to the range, I think “Wow! I love this gun! Why don’t I shoot it more often?”
Mine is also a 6” that I’ve shot loads as light as 90gr @ 630 fps and as heavy as 100gr going 1,300 fps. The best power and accuracy load in mine is 11.0 grs of LilGun yielding 1,230 fps with a Hornady 100 gr XTP bullet and giving me an average of 1.81” groups at 25 yards. That load data comes from the Hodgdon manual.
Briefly, I thought about reaming it to 327 but it gives me everything that I want as it is. If I want more power, I’ll just bring out the 327 mag Ruger SP-101 or talk Green Frog out of his project 616 gun!

Congrats bdgreen. I have 2 of the 4”, one has been reamed to .327. I sometimes wish I’d went with a longer barrel for the .327 to utilize the increased velocity but still a hoot to shoot. But so are all the other .32 chamberings.

These late Model 16’s were under appreciated at the time as many of limited editions from that era sadly were.

One of my all-time favorite S&Ws. (The young people would say it's a "GOAT," I guess. Curious acronym.   ) When I bought my first one years and years ago I liked it so well I quickly bought a spare. A couple of years ago I realized I wouldn't live long enough to wear out the original, so I sold the spare to a gentleman here on our forum. (I hope he is enjoying it.) They are just GREAT revolvers. I am not a big fan of the stocks, but that is a matter of personal taste. Hope you enjoy the 16-4. I still shoot mine now and then and am just as happy with it as ever. Mine seems to be an exceptional shooter with anything I've ever put in it.

What's a fair price for them? I never noticed these 16-4s. I am a big 32 fan and one of these would make a nice addition to my accumulation. Have a 30-1 I really like and recently picked up a Ruger/Lipsey's 5" GP100 in 327 Federal. Like the Ruger a lot but it's not a S&W K-frame.
Did any of them come with normal target stocks? Do they have target hammers and triggers?

I’ve never seen one come from S&W other than what is seen in the OP’s post. Always with the combat stocks, target hammer and trigger, black Patridge blade, with 4-, 6-, and 8.375” barrels. Don’t recall ever seeing one in nickel.

I bought a 6" example when they first came out. They were slow movers at first and prices were very reasonable. I handloaded both 32 S&W Long and 32 H&R Magnums. I also reamed the chambers to take 327 Fed. Mag ammo. The gun handles the hot stuff easily.

I hope you kept those FGSC stocks that came on it... not only were they original to the gun, but now they’re bringing crazy prices on their own... I’ve seen nice ones with asking prices near the 1990 price of the whole gun!  to my own hand they’re the best fitting factory grips S&W ever made.

When I built “Project 616” I found a 4” Model 617 barrel to be rebored. With the heavy underlug, I’m not sure the 6” would have balanced all that well for me, but one thing about the shorter barrel, I do get complaints about the noise. With full snort loads that 327 is just plain rowdy!!  Since it’s just a stainless version of your blued 327, I probably didn’t have to tell you though, did I?

All of them I’ve seen lately, regardless of barrel length, were priced North of a grand. I’d feel lucky to buy one today in the $1200-1300 range.
It was a sort of special production run (or maybe a “deluxe standard”) and every one I’ve ever seen had target trigger and hammer and Finger Groove Smooth Combats from the factory. I could be wrong, and certainly have been before, but that’s been my experience. This goes for all three barrel lengths.

You'll enjoy that 16-4, these K Frame 32's are my favorite guns to shoot. The 6" 16-4 did this with Fiocchi wadcutters at 10 yards from a rest...

I was lucky enough to be offered this Model 16-4 last week. Belonged to a good friend who bought it very reasonable due to some finish issues. He sold it to me for an extremely good price with the Fastfire III but missing the combat stocks. I promptly reamed it to .327 Federal and it’s fun and extremely accurate. It joins the pair of K Frame .327 guns that Andy Horvath built for me.
