Arrow Round butt N-frame combats...so different !

Hi folks,

I was unusually fortunate recently, and scored an N-frame I’d been looking for.

It came equipped with some beautiful round-butt combats that are thicker than any I’d seen prior. They fit me very well.

Is there a particular time period or model series that had these larger grips? I see the later ‘flat side’ Combats were thinner, but was not aware of the jumbos until now.

They look like factory washers, and the usual giveaway -the logos- are factory.

Even the fly-cutter marks look good from here...

With the undersized fit, I have to wonder if those are K frames installed on an N frame.

The pic makes it look more ‘under’ than it is in real life.

The red bracketed area would be thinner in a K/L grip. I feel these are factory, and n-sized...I just have never seen any so....CHUNKY before.

Early type Combats. Also found on 3" 24-3s. The only factory "combat" grips I've ever found at all comfortable.

Default "Fat" grips

I believe your grips are S&W "factory" combats...

The very early combat grips WERE "Fat" like yours are...

Nice looking sets of Combats you have, patriot. The real scarce set is the later 'flat side' Combats without medallions. Was told that those stocks were original to only a few PC guns and the 629 DX. The 'flat' style is very comfortable for me, the early type is not.

I have several sets of what you call Jumbo RB N frame combat stocks. I’m pretty sure they’re just earlier production. One set came on my 627-0, the other was purchased separately. They’re both definitely factory.

The N combats seemed to get slimmer and shorter over time and the degree of “flat” varies. I’m pretty sure your bottom set is the last factory variation (w/o medallions), that were supplied on the 629 DX.

Even the 'flat' Combats can be different in shape. The difference is more noticeable at the bottom.

Great post! I was wondering about my hand filling round butt grips that I thought were factory.

The factory combats on the M624 and the flat sides from the 90's are true Smith "Combats"... It appears the "Flat-Side" "Combats" appear to be made of "Goncalo-Alves"... or Tiger-Wood more commonly known... But I've only seen them made of "Pau Ferro" or sometimes called Morado. Mine came off a "DX" and are made of Pau-Ferro wood and have Medallions. Either way your "Flats" appear to be OEM Smith which is really cool.

The Combats on your M624 are for sure OEM 80's Combats as well.

The super thick one's... they Also appear to be legit OEM combats... maybe from the 70's? But I've never ever seen a set that thick and I collect both the 80's and 90's OEM combats.

That is what makes me go "hmmmmm"... But as you pointed out the inside of the Medallions mounts/brackets, the router cuts, the brass insert, and most importantly both the over all length along with the profile and the location of the finger grooves all appear exactly like all my 80's Combats in every way... (except for the thickness of them of course). I'd be willing to say with 95% certainty that the "Chunky" ones are in fact OEM Factory Combats due to the above aforementioned exacting characteristics.

I've bought "Combats" from other manufacturers in the past that claimed to be perfect OEM combat substitutes. Don't get me wrong... They were nicely done. However, each of the aftermarket "Manufacturers" had their own "ideas" on finger groove placement, their width from front to back, the left grip side thumb cut profile, and lastly (most annoyingly too), the overall length of the aftermarkets were always longer by about a half inch Longer than the OEM's are. They print like an advertisement logo under a shirt and that is why I got rid of all the aftermarkets. My "Flats" and "Combats" don't print on me at all and are much more comfortable...

Either way, beautiful set of "Combats" and well done! Both eBay and this forum are a great source for OEM "Combats"... I bought a Beautiful pair for $180 shipped from a fellow member here that my favorite handgun my M24-3 Lew Horton Special wears...

I've been looking for a set of the earliest ones like yours for a long time for my 627-2. Those are beautiful!

I am a huge fan of the S&W N Frame Combat Grips. My recent eBay score appear to be "chunky" They are also dated. I hope this helps.

My 610 made in the early 1990s had grips like those in the OP from the factory. I may still have them around someplace.

When you find them send me a pic... I'll give you what they would go for on eBay if they are Round Butt style in good condition...

Oh my Goodness... What a beautiful set of "Combats-You Have" there... I'm a little jealous just a smidgen...

You have very nice tastes... I shoot these lovely stocks with a pair of nice svelte fitting shooting gloves which makes for an uber comfortable and nice combo I must admit! I used them on my M1911-A1 Mil-Spec this past weekend and it made the old 45 even more comfortable than I ever remembered. Im shooting with them on for everything now.

Lovely... Those are exotic! Where and when did you find these and on what Revo/model are they on now/came from? Those almost look like they were made from a Goncalo Alves type of "Burl" almost...

I don't have any RB guns so they went to a good friend.
Definitely Goncalo Aves but with sap wood included.
I really liked the contrast.
They were from 2015 when I found them at a gunstore

What a nice guy you are! Getting them to a friend with RB's and all. Good for you bro!

Thanks for letting me know about the composition of them too.

The slim RB combats mentioned by S&W Chad as being on the 629 Classic DX are IMO the worst grips ever made. I have them on a M29-5 Classic DX, and if you want to feel the recoil directly in your wrist these grips will do the job. Of course the CDX comes with rubber grips too. I have to look into some round to square grips for my 29-5CDX

If they were not part of a whole package that came with the revolver, I would send them down the road quick for the 300+ they are going for
