Default Model 617 (no dash) Rear Sight Availability

I have the opportunity to buy a Model 617 (no dash) 6" barrel 6 shot 22
with B-Square mount. It appears that the rear sight was removed to install the B-Square mount and the rear sight was misplaced. Does anyone know if an original 617 rear sight is going to be readily available?

Thanks in advance.

You should have no problem finding a rear sight for one. Give Numrich guns parts.com a try.

Thank you for the tip. I guess I need to ask exactly what parts were lost after the B-Square mount was installed.

S&W rear sights, of all types and sizes, show up regularly on eBay. Just be sure to know the measurements for the sight you need.

Yeah, E-bay has a few for around $55. You need to see if your sight has a rounded or squared off front.

The 617 no-dash should have a squared front rear sight and finding a replacement shouldn't be too much of a challenge.

Thanks Jeff. How will I know the measurements for the sight I need? Is there a way to find out what it would have originally came with?

Squared front rear sight. Any chance you could send me or post a photo?

Thanks!

Take a look at this and you can see examples of both. My 617-1 has the rounded front edge of the rear sight assembly.

Here's some pics of my 6" no dash. 2.74 over all length, 1.85 between screws, .50 from front of sight to front hold down screw. The sight blade is .160 high white outline which I added. Was .146 plain black originally.

Previous poster was correct in saying that your no-dash gun would have the square front rear sight. These are no longer available from S&W. You may find one at Numrich, but eBay is probably the more likely source.

As was depicted in racer19j's pictures, the critical dimension is the distance between the elevation screw and the front mount screw. It is not the same on all S&W sights so you need to measure yours and then make sure the one you purchase matches that dimension.

As an alternative, if you are not a purist, Bowen makes their Rough Country rear S&W sight in a square front blank tang. Best installed by a gunsmith - you drill the tang to the correct dimension. The Bowen sight, in my estimation, is far superior to the OE S&W sight and worth the extra money.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Adios,

Pizza Bob
